MEN’S GYMNASTICS
UNIVERSITY PARK – Sophomore Scott Rosenthal of Clearfield and No. 4-ranked Penn State remained undefeated against Big 10 Conference rival Ohio State on Senior Day in Rec Hall Saturday.
With 2,111 fans looking on, the Nittany Lions registered a season-high in defeating the No. 10 Buckeyes 353.500-342.500.
Rosenthal, No. 1 on the still rings in Penn State’s previous six meets and ranked No. 2 in the nation by GymInfo, earned a 15.700 from the judges to tie teammate Miguel Pineda for first place.
A duel with No. 1 Brandon Wynn of Ohio State didn’t materialize when the Buckeye suffered an injury competing in the vault event.
Nihir Kothari (15.000) and Felix Aronovich (14.700) rounded out the season-high 60.700 for the top-ranked still rings unit in the country.
Junior Warren Yang won in floor exercise and tied for first on the parallel bars and high bar to earn Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors.
The Big Ten Network taped the meet for telecast on Saturday at 3 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
BETHANY, W.Va. – Sophomore Matt Shiner of Clearfield scored five points and grabbed three rebounds in No. 6 seed Westminster’s season-ending 90-58 Presidents’ Athletic Conference playoff loss to No. 3 seed Bethany on Feb. 22.
The 6-3 guard played 18 minutes in his fourth start for the Titans.
Westminster (7-19) shot a season-low 31.8 percent (21-for-66) from the field, while Bethany (19-7) shot 61.1 percent (33-for-54) in eliminating the Titans for the third year at a row in Hummel Field House.
Shiner, who transferred from Penn State Behrend after his freshman year, finished sixth in scoring for the Titans with 91 points, a 4.1 average.
He hit 31 of 79 field goal attempts, including 16 of 42 three-pointers, and was 13-for-15 at the foul line to tie for the team lead in free-throw shooting percentage (86.7).
Shiner, who averaged 12.8 minutes, had four assists, 11 steals and one blocked shot.

WRESTLING
WILLIAMSPORT – Sophomore 174-pounder Jeff Thomas of Curwensville missed the last two Lycoming dual meets as well as the Empire Collegiate Conference Championships because of an injury and finished the season 9-10.
He suffered the season-ending injury against SUNY Cortland’s James Ondris on Feb. 5 but toughed out the final minute of the 11-5 loss.
Thomas was 7-8 in dual meet bouts for the Warriors, who extended their streak of consecutive winning seasons to 25 with a 12-11 record.
Lycoming had three runners-up and placed fifth in the conference tourney.

DUBOIS – Former Clearfield Area High School matman Holden Lowe was runner-up for Penn State DuBois in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Pennsylvania State Championships hosted by Williamson Trade School at Media on Feb. 12.
He returned to the team at mid-season and posted a 3-3 record.
The Lions repeated as state champs as David Hommell (133) won an individual title while Nick Bogacki (125) of DuBois, Garrett Zarecky at 141 and Anthony Ferguson (285) lost in the finals, Ryan Terwilliger (165) and Steven Terwilliger (174) of Brockway and James Mosher (285) of Sheffield placed third and Ty Albright (157) was fourth.
On Saturday, Penn State DuBois wrestling team was runner-up to West Chester at the 14-team NCWA Mid-East Conference Championships at Lafayette College in Easton with Mosher winning the 285 title.
Hommell, Kasey Haines (141) of Redbank Valley, Albright and Ryan Terwilliger were beaten in the finals.
Matt Park of Penn State DuBois was selected Mid-East Conference Coach of the Year.

SOFTBALL
SALISBURY, N.C. – Senior first baseman Brittany Pataky of Clearfield hit .333 with five safeties and drove in two runs as Lock Haven swept five games in the Catawba Invitational Tournament over the weekend.
The Lady Eagles defeated West Liberty (W.Va.) 3-0 and Tiffin (Ohio) 4-2 Friday, Winston-Salem (N.C.) State 14-0 in five innings and Fairmont (W.Va.) State 4-0 Saturday and Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) 4-1 Sunday.
Pataky drove in what proved to be the winning run against Tiffin with a third-inning single and had a pair of singles and walked twice against Winston-Salem.
Last year, she was second on the team in hits (35) and doubles (6), tied for third in home runs (2), fourth in runs (15), and tied for fourth in RBIs (16). Her fielding average was .989 for 275 chances.
Pataky owns a .272 career batting average with 49 hits and 24 RBIs and a .982 fielding average for 379 chances.

BASEBALL
NEW MARKET, Va. – Sophomore Ben McGary of Curwensville started in center field in the first game and on the mound in the nightcap as Pitt-Bradford opened the season by splitting a doubleheader with Dickinson at Rebel Field Sunday.
He drove in two runs with sacrifice flies for the Panthers in their 12-1 victory.
In the 8-7 loss, he was not involved in the decision after working 1.2 innings and allowing four hits, one walk and two runs. The left-hander struck out two.
Last spring, McGary pitched in 12 games, making one start. He was 0-1 with a 7.48 earned run average in 21.2 innings, surrendering 40 hits and 34 runs, 18 earned. He struck out 11, walked 12 and hit two batters.
He started one of the three games he played in the outfield and was hitless in three at-bats while scoring two runs.
Sam Gardner, a freshman pitcher/outfielder from Curwensville, also is a member of the Pitt-Bradford squad.
