WHAT: Considering a career as a physician assistant?

BACKGROUND: Using her own journey as an example, Jennifer will be presenting the process involved in becoming a physician assistant, as well as what the job is “really” like. If anyone is considering this profession, she will present the facts involved with the career, as well as her own insider’s view of the process, and the daily life of a PA.

WHAT: A Geologist’s View on Marcellus Shale

WHO: Prof. Tristan Ashcroft, Associate Professor in Geology
WHEN: March 15, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

BACKGROUND: Why is there a gas drilling boom in the Marcellus?  It is a simple question, but there are many answers, and some can be controversial.  Tristan Ashcroft, Instructor in the LHU Geology & Physics Department, offers his viewpoint as a geologist on the Marcellus Shale and associated natural gas. 

The presentation will include discussion of why there is natural gas in the Marcellus Shale, why it is now of interest to the gas industry, the basics of fracking, an overview of environmental questions, and what role Pennsylvanians might have in the impending gas boom.  Geologists study topics related both to the gas industry and to the environment, so they are perhaps unusual in that they are not required to view either field as adversaries. 

WHAT: Update on Lyme’s Disease

WHO: Dr. Joseph A. Vetrano, MD

BACKGROUND: Dr. Vetrano plans on presenting five clinical vignettes of actual cases of Lyme Disease that he treated over the last two years, each of which highlight key facts about the disease, and, more importantly, dispel some key misconceptions. 

WHAT: Issues Surrounding Prevention & Treatment of Postpartum Disorders

WHO: Mr. Jeremy Condon, Jennifer Mae Bowers Foundation
WHEN: April 7, 7 p.m.

BACKGROUND:  Jeremy will discuss his observations of his late wife, who battled postpartum depression and psychosis. He will then speak about risk factors for postpartum disorders, recent and current treatment methods, and the issues that hinder proper treatment. He will also touch on the three new groundbreaking programs in the USA that are treating postpartum disorders effectively by considering the unique needs of new mothers who are suffering from postpartum psychiatric disorders.

The LHU Clearfield Speaker Series is an outreach program for the campus and community made by physicians, faculty, and other community members.  They will be scheduled throughout the fall.  

The presentation is open to the public and there is no admission fee.
