CURWENSVILLE – Members of Curwensville Borough Council are being asked to consider adopting a street onto the borough map.
The topic came up when three residents of the borough came to the meeting and requested that the borough continue to maintain School Street. According to Lyle Domico, who spoke on behalf of the men, the borough had, in the past, performed winter maintenance on School Street. The residents requested that the borough do so again, and possibly some spring/summer maintenance, such as filling in potholes and ruts with gravel.
“If it’s not taken care of tonight, I’ll find a way to take care of it,” said Domico.
Then-Council President Mark Curulla referred to a letter from 1972 from council’s solicitor at the time regarding private roadways. He stated that for the borough to be able to maintain it, council would need to ordain it, and make it a public street. It was noted that if the road was being plowed now by the road crew, then a surcharge could be sought from members of council.
This brought up the topic of other un-ordained streets in the borough that are currently being plowed. Lead man Allen Stephens indicated that the crew does plow private, or un-ordained streets. In some of the instances, the streets are partially public, partially private.
Council agreed to begin researching the matter of ordaining Church Street. Curulla warned, however, that if they do this, they would have to accept, or make public, all of the unordained streets in the borough.
