DUBOIS – The innovative dance company Soul Steps will appear at Penn State DuBois in February as part of the campus’ Performing Arts and Lecture Series.Â
Based in New York City, the group of step artists specialize in “stepping”. Soul Step members describe the style as, “a percussive dance movement that uses the hands, feet, arms and legs to create polyrhythmic sounds. Step dance has close resemblance to South African gumboot dancing, which originated in South African mines in the late 1800s.”Â
Soul Steps was founded in 2005 by step artist Maxine Lyle in hopes of disseminating an awareness of step dance. Their performances tell personal and cultural stories of the Soul Steps artists and the generations of ancestors they represent.Â
The performance is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Feb. 15, in the gymnasium at Penn State DuBois.Â
As part of the Performing Arts and Lecture Series, this event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Office of Student Life at 814-375-4764, or studentactivities@psu.edu.
