The Bobcats picked up four pins and two forfeits on the evening to win for only the second time this season to up their overall record to 2-6.
Curwensville ended the 2010-11 dual meet season with a 7-12 record under head coach Duane Wriglesworth.
Senior Kyle Kyler of the Tide was out of the line-up with an illness and injury. If Kyler had been able to go he would have wrestled at either 189 or 215. Clarion picked up one their forfeits at 215 with Austin Smith getting his first win of the year against eight losses.
The match started at 189 with Andrew Bigley of Clarion getting a reversal with just four seconds remaining in the match to win a pivotal bout over Chad Desmett of the Tide, 4-2.
Clarion also received a forfeit at 285 with Cameron Slike getting win number 20 on the year. The win gave the Bobcats an early 15-0 lead over the Golden Tide.
The Tide as well received a gift of forfeits as they had four on the night with Aaron Kline getting one at 103 to put his squad on the board.
With Clarion leading now 15-6 Riley Gunter shut out Tide freshman Tyler Mays at 112, 4-0. Gunter used a first period takedown and a third period reversal to send the Bobcats ahead in the team score 18-6.
A forfeit at 119 for Greg Koptchak edged the Tide to within six of the Bobcats at 18-12 before the visitors would get two first period falls to pull away once again.
Mike Bauer upped his record to 24-4 on the year at 125 as he pinned Curwensville’s Brandon Sass in just 1:08 followed by another first period fall when Tristen Shaffer of Clarion pinned Alex Holt at 130 in 1:51. The two pins gave the Bobcats the lead at 30-12.
Standout junior, Jake Keller, picked up six points for the Tide when he pinned Tyler Allen in 3:49 at 135 pounds. Keller, now 28-1 on the year, built a 12-0 first period lead, scoring ten near fall points in the first two minutes before ending the match in the second frame.
The Bobcats came right back however, as Ricki Elliot had a 5-0 margin over Nathan Wriglesworth before getting the fall at 1:27 of the first period. The win at 140 enabled the Bobcats to double up the Tide at 36-18 with four bouts remaining.
Hunter McCracken of Curwensville brought the Tide crowd to their feet with a second period pin in 3:15 at 145 over Joey Beck. McCracken trailed Beck 4-0 before he reversed the Bobcat junior and landed the fall.
The Tide inched closer when sophomore Austin Pollick received a forfeit at 152 bringing Curwensville to within six at 36-30 with now only two bouts left.
Clarion, though, had Danny Walters on deck with the teams best record at 24-1. The Bobcat senior made sure he and his teammates would go home victorious when he registered a fall in 1:25 over Jason Baker at 160 pounds putting Clarion up 42-30 with just the 171 pound match to be decided.
Lewis Rhine, at 171, received the fourth forfeit of the night for Curwensville setting the final at 42-36.
Coach Wriglesworth said afterwards, “We didn’t match up very well against Clarion. We were able to move some kids around to our advantage but so were they, which basically balanced things out.”
Then Wriglesworth spoke about this season and his team, “We knew coming into this year that we were going to be a young and inexperienced team. Because of this we also realized it would be a tough year. I am, however, very proud of the fact that this team was able to win seven dual meets.”
Curwensville, with the dual meet season over, will now wait for the District 9 tournament at Clarion University on February 25 and 26.
In junior high action it was Clarion winning on “Criteria E” over the young Tide team after a 51-51 regulation draw.
Curwensville ends the junior high season at 7-7 under coach Mike Bookhamer.
