John F. Mencer, Sr., 81, of RD Philipsburg died on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at ARHS, Altoona Hospital Campus.
Born December 2, 1929 he was the son of the late Charles E. Mencer, Sr. and Mary Mencer.
Mr. Mencer was a member of the US Army Reserves and retired with the rank of Colonel.
Mr. Mencer was a graduate of the Philipsburg High School, Class of 1947 and attended Penn State University. Illness forced his premature withdrawal, but later he earned a bachelor’s degreen in business at Rider College in Trenton, NJ. His pursuit of a success full business career let him to various jobs in New York and Philadelphia. He was employed in various capacities involving finance, corporate taxation by Sylvania, Smith Corona, Campbell’s Soup and Certain-Teed.  He also taught as adjunct business professor at Rider College.
Upon retiring from the private sector he worked for the IRS and the borough of Middletown. He returned to the Philipsburg area in the late 1990’s where he spent his remaining years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Josephine Catherine of Jersey Shore, PA.
He was married in 1951 to the former Barbara J. Plubell.
He is survived by his brother, Charles E. Mencer, Jr. of Philipsburg; three sons, John F. Mencer, Jr. and his wife Suzanne of Littleton, CO, Michael G. Mencer of Lincoln, NE, and Mark P. Mencer and his wife Bessy, of Cheyenne, WY; two daughters, Susan M. Mencer of Charlotte, NC and Anne G. Doms and her husband George of Pennsauken, NJ, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 31, 2011 from 5-7 p.m. at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home, 719 E. Spruce Street, Philipsburg.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic church with the Rev. Robert Kelly as celebrant.
Interment will be at the Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
