CURWENSVILLE – It was a clean sweep of the 2010-11 season for the Glendale girls basketball team over Curwensville as the Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Tide Monday night at Patton Hall 63-33.
Glendale had beaten the Tide in the first game of the year for both squads back on December 11, by a 56-37 score on the Lady Vikings home court.
The Moshannon Valley League contest wasn’t much of a contest once the Vikings kicked the offense into a another gear after trailing 7-6 early in the first period.
Glendale then took the lead for good, 11-7, only to have the Tide cut it to 11-9 before a huge run by the Vikings put the game completely out of reach.
A 16-0 run ensued from the first quarter into the second frame before Curwensville freshman Tierra Shope hit a bucket making it 27-11 in favor of the Lady Vikings who now stand at 8-4 on the year.
Unfortunately for the Lady Tide, the Glendale ladies weren’t done yet as they stretched the run to 39-3 before things got back to somewhat normal.
Still, the Vikings outscored Curwensville 22-3 in the second period and 16-6 in the third to lead 55-18 after three periods were in the books.
The mercy rule went into effect early in the fourth stanza as Glendale accumulated a 40 point lead to pick up its second straight win.
Head coach Rusty McCracken of Curwensville did see a bright a spot with the play of his freshmen, “Our freshmen brought much needed energy to the game, that’s our future and they need to play.”
The Lady Tide actually had 18 points come from their bench players with sophomore Rebecca Johnson leading the all Tide scorers with 10. Three freshmen had eight points between them with Megan McGarry scoring four and Tiara Bumbarger and Shope each having two.
Then McCracken added, “Glendale played smart basketball. They play very well.”
Finally the Tide coach addressed the trouble his squad had with the Lady Vikings full court press, “We kind of forgot what we were doing out there on their press and didn’t seem to remember how to break it.”
The Lady Tide did win the junior varsity contest 34-27 to even it’s record at 5-5 on the season.
Morgan Biddle of Glendale had a game high 21 points while teammate Kelli McGarvey dumped in 15 with Sara Tarr adding 10 .
It doesn’t get any easier for the Lady Tide (2-8) on Wednesday evening when it’s a road trip to St. Marys to battle the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic. JV action starts at 6 pm with the varsity game to immediately follow.
NOTE: The Lady Tide will host West Branch on Friday night at Curwensville with the JV game beginning at 6 pm. It will be “Think Pink Night” at Patton Hall and all cancer survivors will be recognized at halftime of the varsity game. All proceeds gained through various fund raisers will be donated to local area cancer patient facilities.
