CURWENSVILLE – The Curwensville Area High School girls basketball team will have to put Friday night’s Allegheny Mountain League South Division game against DuBois Central Catholic in the rearview mirror as quickly as possible.
Â
The struggling Lady Tide (2-5) took a major step backwards with 40 turnovers and a 17.9 shooting percentage, allowing the Lady Cardinals to soar to a 56-28 win in Patton Hall.
Â
“There’s just no reason for us to have that many turnovers and shoot that poorly, especially against a team that I thought we were pretty well matched up against,” perplexed and disappointed Curwensville coach Rusty McCracken said. “I didn’t think they were 30 points better than us.
Â
“I knew it was going to be a tough game, but we just can’t put four quarters together.”
Â
Despite failing to average a point a minute for the third game in a row and the fourth time this season, Curwensville (2-5) went to the locker room at intermission down only 23-17.
Â
Lady Cardinal first-year coach Tom Stafford, hoping to set an up-tempo pace into motion, started three sophomores and two freshmen in a fullcourt man press, and the youngsters held their own even though missing five shots and turning the ball over four times in the first three minutes.
Â
That’s because the Lady Tide tallied just four points, three when Taylor Bumbarger was fouled on a putback.
Â
Stafford began inserting his veteran players, but it was frosh guard Kylee Schaffer who keyed a 12-0 run with six points.
Â
Bumbarger stepped to the line twice in one-and-one situations and canned three free throws to trigger a 9-0 run.
Â
Katie Wriglesworth ended it with a putback that gave Curwensville its second, and last lead, at 15-12 with 30 seconds gone in the second period.
Â
After that, it was all DuBois Central Catholic (4-8).
Â
Beginning with Alyssa Marchioni’s two free throws with 6:46 left in the half, the Lady Cardinals outscored the Lady Tide 44-11.
Â
Pairs of foul shots by Becca Johnson and Bumbarger were Curwensville’s only points during an 11-minute stretch that ended with Savannah Strickland’s jumper in the lane with 4:31 remaining in the third period.
Â
Those were the Lady Tide’s last points of the quarter as the Lady Cardinals opened a 36-21 spread.
Â
Miller Hopkins asserted herself in the low post at the start of the second half with six of her game-high 13 points.
Â
DuBois Central Catholic’s pressure defense was especially tough on the hosts in the middle 16 minutes. They made only one field goal in each period and totaled 25 turnovers.
Â
“I don’t understand why we can stay with teams in one half and then come out and try to adjust, and the adjustments don’t work,” McCracken said. “We didn’t play well and were down by six at halftime. Other teams find a way to put things together. We don’t.”
Â
Strickland accounted for the Lady Tide’s final two field goals in the hectic fourth quarter, during which Wriglesworth, Katrina Seaburn and Bumbarger fouled out.
Â
Bumbarger, 7-for-10 at the foul line, was high for Curwensville with 11 points and also grabbed nine rebounds. Seaburn had 10 boards.
Â
DuBois Central Catholic got 10 points from Marchioni and 10 rebounds from Maria French.
Â
The Lady Cardinals’ shooting percentage wasn’t great, 27.4, but the visitors benefited by launching 73 shots because they had so many second and third chances. Of their 45 rebounds, no less than 23 were on their own missed shots.
Â
The Lady Tide goes on the road next week for non-league games against Johnsonburg Tuesday and Bucktail at Renovo Thursday.
Â
Coach Bob Eshelman’s Lady Tide junior varsity won the prelim 40-31 with Tiara Bumbarger scoring 14 points and Tierra Shope adding nine.
