Helen D. “Dee” Shugarts, 70 of Clearfield, PA, passed away on Jan. 3, 2011 at her residence.
Born on Aug. 20, 1940 in Clearfield, PA, she was the daughter of Ray and Myrtle (Ogden) Cleaver.
A 1958 graduate of Clearfield Area High School, Mrs. Shugarts worked for her father at the former Cleaver Ag Store while she was growing up. She retired from J.C. Penney Company, where she had been employed as the manager of the stockroom, after thirty years of service.
Mrs. Shugarts was a member of the West Side United Methodist Church, where she served as a volunteer for the church in different capacities over the years. While she was growing up she served as the Worthy Advisor of the Rainbow Girls. She was a member of the Clearfield Federation of Women and was a member of Curves in Clearfield. Mrs. Shugarts was an active participant in the Relay for Life, where she walked as a cancer survivor.
She was especially proud of her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister and will be sadly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Andrew J. Shugarts, whom she married on Oct. 8, 1960 in the West Side United Methodist Church in Clearfield, PA; three children: Sandee L. Smeal and her husband Donald of Ansonville, PA, Brenda L. English and her husband Ed of Philipsburg, PA, and Brian A. Shugarts and his wife Kathy of Clearfield, PA; six grandchildren: Shana Parks and her husband John, Don Smeal, Justine English, Joel English, Meagan Shugarts and Alex Shugarts; a sister, Sandy Tkacik of Clearfield and a brother, Fred Cleaver and his wife Esther of Egypt, PA. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Shugarts is preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held on Jan. 7 at 11:00 a.m. at the West Side United Methodist Church in Clearfield, with Rev. Dr. Jolene Willis officiating. Interment will be in the Crown Crest Memorial Park in Hyde, PA.
Friends will be received at the Bennett and Houser Funeral Home, Inc., 312 E. Locust Street, Clearfield, PA on Jan. 6 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m.
