Harmony Defeats Clearfield 52-40 in Lions Club Tourney Consolation Game

PURCHASE LINE – Clearfield cut down its turnovers and shot a decent percentage from the field, but Harmony rode an 18-6 second period to a 52-40 victory in the consolation game of the 32nd Purchase Line Lions Club Holiday Tournament Tuesday night.

Both teams started slowly, with the Bisons on top 8-5 after one quarter.

However, the Owls reeled off the first 12 points of the second period and never were headed. They were up 23-14 at intermission and kept the Bisons at bay after they had narrowed their deficit to 27-22 in the third quarter.

Point guard Jack Mellgard scored a season-high 16 points and Robbie Myers tallied 10 for Clearfield, which made 18 of 50 field goal attempts for 36 percent.

The Bisons wound up with 18 turnovers, most of them in the first half, but that was 14 fewer than they had against Somerset Monday night.

Clearfield (0-6) kept Harmony (5-2) standouts Erik Welteroth and Cameron Norris somewhat under control with a triangle-and-two defense in the first half, but their teammates stepped up early in the second period.

In the final 16 minutes, Welteroth and Norris combined for 16 of the Owls’ 29 points and finished with 19 and 17, respectively.

Mellgard, Welteroth and Norris were named to the All-Tournament Team along with Purchase Line’s Cody Stolitza and Nick Hudak and Somerset’s Jake Close and Brent Barron.

Most Valuable Player laurels went to Seth Goodlin of Purchase Line (6-2), which outlasted Somerset (2-6) 76-72 in the championship game.

Clearfield is off until Jan. 5 when Philipsburg-Osceola visits Weiss Gym for a Mountain League game.
