RIDGWAY – The Curwensville Lady Tide picked up their first victory of the 2010-11 season Friday night by beating Ridgway 40-31 on the Lady Elkers home court.
Lady Tide head coach Rusty McCracken and his squad now stand at 1-2 on the year and afterwards McCracken spoke about the win, “It was really nice going into the locker room with a half-time lead for a change.”
Then the Tide leader added, “We have been notoriously a bad third quarter team but tonight we came out and played even with Ridgway to maintain our lead.”
Curwensville outscored the Lady Elkers in the second and fourth quarters (11-7 and 12-7) to earn the hard fought victory in an Allegheny Mountain League game.
Ridgway, now 0-4 this season, was paced on offense by Katie Oknefski with nine and Bryton Dybowski with eight.
The Lady Tide were guided by Savannah Strickland who had 13 and Taylor Bumbarger with eight.
Bumbarger and Katie Wrigleswsorth made sure the Tide won the battle of the boards, 48-36, as Bumbarger grabbed 14 boards with Wriglesworth adding 12.
McCracken commented about the lesson his team learned, “We finally found a way to win a game with a positive fourth quarter. Hopefully this lesson in winning will help us down the long road ahead.”
In junior varsity action it was the Lady Tide also picking up their first win of the year for coach Bob Eshelman coming away with a 30-24 win over the Ridgway youngsters.
The Lady Tide are back in action on Monday night when they host the Damsels of Moshannon Valley at Patton Hall in a Moshannon Valley League battle. The JV game beings at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
