WASHINGTON, D.C. — During recent a reception, hosted by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), U.S. Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, R-Howard, congratulated Hugh Mose, general manager of the Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) for receiving the APTA’s Outstanding Public Transportation Award.
Mose received the award at a ceremony in San Antonio this past October. Thompson took the opportunity to express his appreciation to Mose for his outstanding work at CATA.
Mose has spent 33 years in public transportation, 15 years of which have been spent at CATA. Under Mose’s leadership, in 2005 CATA became the first transit authority on the East Coast to operate solely on compressed natural gas.
“Recently, Hugh Mose was honored nationally for making the greatest contribution to a local transit system. I was not able to attend the event in San Antonio, but felt it necessary to extend my gratitude by recognizing Hugh during the annual APTA event,” said Thompson.
“Under Hugh’s leadership, CATA has become a visionary organization. Between their partnership with Penn State, which allows students access to the bus service, and running an all natural gas fueled fleet, Hugh and his team have looked toward the future and utilized technologies in order to make their services better for the Centre region,” added Thompson.
CATA boasts some 33 thousand riders per day, 7 million riders per year, which makes State College the most transit-intensive small urban area in the nation.
“Many local residents utilize CATA’s services, but rarely see the operations behind the scenes or the leaders that help keep the Centre region running. We have a real treasure in CATA, and I am personally grateful for Hugh Mose’s vision and congratulate him on this award. We in the Centre region are blessed with such a great transit system and I look forward to continue working with Hugh and his staff in the upcoming Congress,” added Thompson.
The APTA is a nonprofit international association of more than 1,500 public and private member organizations, engaged in the areas of bus, paratransit, light rail, commuter rail, subways, waterborne passenger services, and high-speed rail. More than 90 percent of the people using public transportation in the United States and Canada are served by APTA member systems.
