HARRISBURG — The Department of Environmental Protection has approved an expansion project at the Sandy Run Landfill in Bedford County that will extend the facility’s life expectancy and improve its environmental protection measures.
The project will expand the landfill’s existing footprint by 22 acres. Additionally, Sandy Run will be allowed to increase the height of its current waste piles by 88 feet on a 19-acre section of the existing landfill. The landfill will also excavate and add a liner to five additional acres that are now without protective barrier.
“This project addresses the short- and long-term needs of the surrounding communities,” said DEP South-central Regional Director Rachel Diamond. “With an expanded capacity, Sandy Run will be able to continue accepting trash at the current rate for the next decade. At the same time, placing a protective liner under five acres of trash that are currently unlined will help prevent possible future environmental issues.”
This project will add 10 years to the landfill’s life expectancy at the current permitted average daily volume of 750 tons per day and a maximum daily volume of 900 tons per day.
DEP approved the landfill’s environmental assessment in February. Broad Top Township has entered into a host agreement with the landfill.
