LOCK HAVEN – Lock Haven University has received word that House Bill 2291 was signed into law by Gov. Edward G. Rendell on Oct. 29, as Act 82 of 2010. Included in this bill is an RCAP authorization in the amount of $4 million for the Lock Haven University Science Center. Plans for the 80,000 square-foot facility were announced at a Science Summit in April. The new Science Center will be constructed at the University’s East Campus facilities.
The University was notified of the RCAP funding by the office of Rep. Michael K. Hanna, D-76. RCAP refers to Redevelopment Capital Assistance Program.
“RCAP money is designed to fund innovative capital projects that will create jobs for the future,” Hanna said. “I can’t think of a project that better defines this than the new science center Lock Haven University will construct with the funds. With increased development in our region’s Marcellus Shale, this new science center will serve as an important link between education and industry, providing qualified graduates to fill the needs of the gas and oil industry in Pennsylvania.”
Lock Haven University Interim President Barbara B. Dixon stated, “We are especially appreciative of Representative Hanna’s efforts in helping Lock Haven University secure the funding for the new science center.” She added, “New up-to-date science labs are an important in attracting academically talented students, and we look forward to being able to provide the best possible educational experiences for our future students.”
The LHU East Campus Science Center is a $40.5 million concept, and the University will need to raise $2.5 – $3.5 million in private funding for the facility. Construction is expected to start in 2011.
Lock Haven University is a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), the largest provider of higher education in the commonwealth. Its 14 universities offer more than 250 degree and certificate programs in more than 120 areas of study. Nearly 405,000 system alumni live and work in Pennsylvania.
