CURWENSVILLE – Following Curwensville Borough officials’ and local residents’ concerns of speeding in the area, PennDOT District 2 placed a radar-controlled speed display sign along Route 879 (State Street) in Curwensville Borough, Clearfield County. The sign faces Route SR eastbound.
The speed display sign will remain on location for about four weeks or as long as weather permits. The sign will register the speeds of vehicles traveling along that section of SR 879, which has a posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour.
The sign uses radar to determine the speeds of oncoming traffic. Those vehicle speeds are then posted on the lighted section of the sign. Above the speed display is a speed limit sign showing the posted speed limit for that section of Route 879.
The Curwensville Borough Police Department will also provide patrols in the area to ensure motorists obey the posted speed limit. The police will also monitor the SR 879/Ridge Avenue intersection.
Police remind motorists traveling east on SR 879 into Curwensville Borough that left turns onto Ridge Avenue are prohibited. In addition, motorists are not permitted to turn right from Ridge Avenue onto Route 879 westbound. Signs are in place to alert motorists of these turning restrictions.
Motorists turning left from Ridge Avenue to SR 879 eastbound are reminded of Pennsylvania’s laws regarding stop signs. Regulations state that when approaching a stop sign, vehicles must:
- stop at a clearly marked stop line or, if no stop line is present;
- stop before entering a crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if no crosswalk is present; and
- stop at the point nearest the intersecting roadway where the driver has a clear view of approaching traffic on the intersecting roadway before entering.
PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to www.511PA.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions before heading out.
