Dominick G. Suplizio Jr., 89, of DuBois died Friday at the DuBois Regional Medical Center. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Born on Nov. 25, 1920 in DuBois, he was the son of the late Dominick G. Suplizio Sr. and Mary Antonia (Rossi) Suplizio. He was a master sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theatre in World War II.
He was a lifetime member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, DuBois and the DuBois Volunteer Fire Departments Friendship Hose Co. #2.
Mr. Suplizio served as a City of DuBois Fire Chief from 1961 to 1962. He was a DuBois City council member for 12 years and served as the Mayor of the City of DuBois from 1989 to 1990.
In addition, he was a member of the Loyal Order of Ruptured Ducks. He was a member of the George D. Montgomery American Legion Post #17 and the James J. Patterson Post 813 Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a life member of the Sons of Italy of America. He was a frequent Red Cross blood donor, giving over 10 gallons.
He was a carman for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad for 40 years in both DuBois and Raceland, KY. In his last few years of service, he worked as the fire marshal in the railroad car shops, where he was responsible for the safety of 2400 employees. He was a 1938 graduate of the DuBois Area High School.
He married Julia R. (Federici) Suplizio on April 3, 1943. She survives him at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Anthony “Bubs” Suplizio and his wife, Christall of DuBois; Judith A. Suplizio of Wilmington, DE; Michael E. Suplizio and his wife, DianaJean of Darien, IL; Mary Ann Parente and her husband, Anthony of Cecil; Theresa S. Suplizio of DuBois; and John F. “Herm” Suplizio of DuBois.
He is survived by 12 grandchildren, Mary Antonia Cole of Marietta, GA; Anastasia M. Downer of DuBois; Angelique M. Suplizio of DuBois; Dominick G. Suplizio of DuBois; Nickolas A. Suplizio of DuBois; Amanda Marie Miller of Warrenville, IL; Andrea Lynn Rinas of Chicago, IL; Laura Parents-Comas of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Julianne Parente of Pittsburgh; Gina M. Parente of Cecil; Meghan C. Suplizio of Richlands, NC; and Timothy M. Suplizio of Harrisburg; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Suplizio was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Paul Suplizio, Joseph Suplizio and James Suplizio; two sisters, Sarah “Dala” Dorazio and Susie Pasierb; one daughter, Donna S. Gangloff; one grandson, Peter Suplizio; and one great-grandson, Anthony Suplizio.
Friends will be received from 1 – 8 p.m. Sunday at the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.
The DuBois Area Honor Guard will conduct a ritual service at 10:15 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, with Msgr. Richard Siefer as celebrant.
Full military honors will be accorded by the members of the DuBois Area Honor Guard from the church.
Burial will be in St. Catherine’s Cemetery.
