CURWENSVILLE – Supporting those who are battling cancer is the purpose of a benefit event planned by the owners of Starr Hill Vineyard & Winery of Curwensville.
Cancer is a disease that has affected almost every family in our region. Everyone knows someone, a friend or family member, who has battled some form of cancer. The basis for this event is to help those in the midst of the battle strengthen their fight and to honor and celebrate those who have lost that battle. As a group, we can raise funds and awareness to help and aid in cancer prevention, treatment and grief counseling.
This benefit under the tent, “The Art of Wine and Your Favorite Things” will take place at the winery on Sunday, Oct. 3 from 2-5 p.m. Admission is free.
The event will feature wellness exhibits, craft vendors, and local artists, among others. Musical entertainment will be provided by Tom Bezilla, guitar music, from 2-3:30 p.m., and soloist Brenda Weber from 3:30-5 p.m.
Those attending will also be invited to take a tour of the winery and sample some of the many fine wines made by the Starr family.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit local cancer support groups. Three groups will benefit this year – Bri’s Angels Cancer Support Group and the Nathaniel D. Yingling Cancer Support Groups.
Bri’s Angels is named in memory of Briana Cowder. Cowder passed away on Oct. 23, 2007, at the age of 30, after losing her battle to cancer. This cancer support group is comprised of area cancer survivors, those currently undergoing treatment, family members, and close friends. The purpose of the group is to offer families, friends, and patients support, help when needed, and to lend an ear when someone needs to talk. New members are always welcomed and there is no charge to the members.
Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month beginning at 6 p.m. in the First Floor Conference Room at Clearfield Hospital.
The benefit will also support Nathaniel D. Yingling Cancer Center’s Support Groups, one who helps those patients actively undergoing treatment during their time of need. These meetings are held on Thursdays at 2:15 p.m. at the cancer center. The other support group is for family and caregivers and these meetings are held on Wednesdays at 2:15 p.m. at the cancer center. Both of these support groups are provided at no cost to the participants.
“The Art of Wine and Your Favorite Things” displays and vendors include: Pampered Chef, Tammy Holtmeyer; Breast Health Educator, Darlene Rowles; Silpada Jewelry; Daphene Suchanec; Massage Therapy, Delcie Alt, NCTMB; Longaberger Baskets, Jacque Starr; Skin Care/Spa Products, Kathy Macaulay; Rodan & Fields Dermatologists, Jenn Vallimont, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Ann Knab; Party Lite Candles, Sue Diehl; “Created by Abby” Jewelry, Abby Guarino; Handmade Scarves, Gail Badiei.
Each vendor is donating a prize that will be raffled off. Chances for those prizes will be available for purchase and these proceeds will be donated to the cancer support groups.
“We are looking forward to a great turnout for the event. Those attending will have a great time helping a worthy cause,” the Starrs said.
