CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County District Attorney, William A. Shaw, Jr., announced the capture of a wanted fugitive.
Shaw identified the fugitive as Corey James Kubiak, age 41, of Madera, Pennsylvania. Kubiak was added to the Clearfield County Fugitive of the Week list on September 20, 2010.
On July 3, 2002, Trooper Matthew Reifer, of the Pennsylvania State Police, Woodland Barracks, filed a Criminal Complaint charging Kubiak with: 1) driving under the influence, M2; 2) drivers required to be licensed, S; and 3) restraint systems, S.
An affidavit of probable cause filed by Reifer states that on June 21, 2002, the State Police were dispatched at approximately 5:30 pm to investigate a two vehicle crash on state Route 153 approximately one mile south of SR 2027. Upon arrival, Reifer made contact with Kubiak who was identified as the driver of a pick-up truck involved in the crash. Kubiak lost control of his vehicle while trying to pass another car. Kubiak struck the other car causing the crash. After administering field sobriety tests, Reifer transported Kubiak for a blood test.
The alleged victim, who was driving the other vehicle, reported that he was traveling south on SR 153 when a pick-up came from behind and struck his vehicle. The victim reported that the pick-up went off the roadway and then returned to the roadway. The victim’s vehicle was then struck again before Kubiak’s pick-up went up the roadway and overturned.
A preliminary hearing was held on Aug. 14, 2002, at which time Kubiak waived the charges to Court. On July 8, 2004, Kubiak failed to appear for Criminal Call and a warrant was issued for Kubiak’s arrest.
Shaw stated that an anonymous tip provided the location of Kubiak. On Sept. 23, 2010, Clearfield County Deputy Sheriff George DeHaven, accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Samantha Knepp and Deputy Sheriff Mark Coudriet apprehended Kubiak at a residence in Madera. Kubiak was taken into custody without incident. Shaw stated that Kubiak was located as the direct result of citizens willing to provide information to law enforcement.
Shaw reported that Kubiak has been lodged in the Clearfield County jail and his case will be placed on the trial list. Kubiak’s trial will occur within the next six months. Shaw thanked the Clearfield County Sheriff’s Department for their hard work and assistance with this case.
