CLEARFIELD – Area residents are invited to the Clearfield County Centers for Active Living on Sept. 13 – 17 to celebrate National Senior Center Week: “Your Place to Connect.”
During the celebration, the centers will promote the benefits of being an active part there by offering special programs. These programs will focus on the promotion of “good physical and mental health.”
On Monday, Sept. 13, the Clearfield location will hold a Walk-the-Line carnival by Medi-Home Health from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Through “games and fun,” participants will find the ticket to discovering the answer to a number of physical questions related to balance, motor coordination, blood pressure and more.
A foot assessment will be made available to those, whom are in attendance. There will be prizes; refreshments will be served.
At 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15 in Clearfield, Lisa Woods of Bright Horizons will provide a presentation that is entitled “Building a Happy, Healthy Outlook.”
The PA Black Lung Coalition will perform free lung screening tests from 1 – 3 p.m. This series of tests will not only uncover the possibility of Black Lung, but also Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and other breathing concerns.
Please bring your doctor’s address to the screening, as the test results can be mailed to your doctor if that is desired.
On Thursday, Sept. 16 also in Clearfield, Kelly Redding of the Mountain Laurel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center will present a program that is entitled “Healthy Wii,” which uses the interactive video game to improve your health.

The Kylertown center will be offer physical fitness testing at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15. Penny Shadeck, athletic director of Gethsemane United Methodist Church, will perform the testing, which will include exercises in flexibility, endurance and balance.
The center offers various exercise programs that are held at 11 a.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Shadeck leads one of the center’s exercise programs. The fitness test will be repeated in six weeks to gauge the effectiveness of the programs. To learn more about the program, please contact the Kylertown center at 814-345-6338. During National Senior Center Week, the Karthaus location invites the public to view a display of the hand-made crafts, which were created there, at the Karthaus Post Office.
Area residents are invited to attend the center to join in the crafting. Crafts made at the center include blankets, pillows, ceramics, art, place mats, bird houses and much more.
The Karthaus center is open from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and can be reached at 814-263-7277.
On Thursday, Sept. 16 at the Mahaffey location, there is “Invite a Friend and Neighbor Day.” A door prize will be awarded to the person who brings the most guests.
Entertainment will be provided and is set to begin at 11 a.m. by Bev Davis on guitar, playing Country and Gospel music and Martha & Friends will present comedy skits.
The Mahaffey center is open from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and can be reached at 814-277-4544.
Penny Tronzo, of the United Mine Workers Program Fund, will be at the Coalport center at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14. She will be there to lead the program, “A Matter of Balance.” The program focuses on the education of both practicing and maintaining balance and coordination.
In addition, Lori Rancik, of The Women’s Health Center in DuBois, will be speaking at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15 on diabetes. Various health related programs will be given throughout the week, including exercises, brain exercises and nutrition education.
The Coalport center is open 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and can be reached at 814-672-3574.
Those interested in having lunch at any of the centers are asked to call the day before the event to make a meal reservation.
Any Clearfield County resident 60 years of age or older may contribute to the cost of the meal on a donation basis. The cost to those under age 60 is $3.
