George F. Vail Sr., 78 of North Philipsburg, passed away on Aug. 22 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
Born June 24, 1932 in Philipsburg, he was the son of the late George Orin & Nancy Caroline (Vaughn) Vail.
On July 2, 1954 in Cumberland, MD he married Madeline Jean (Scott) Vail, who survives at home.
He is survived by three sons:
George F. Vail Jr. of Philipsburg
Robert E. Vail Sr. and his wife Amy of Brisbin
Mark E. Vail of Philipsburg
Two sisters:
Mildred Darmiento and her husband John of Curwensville
Joan Louise Peters and her husband Calvin of Wallaceton
Seven grandchildren:
Jamie Vail, Tyler Vail, Courtney Vail, CW2 Robert E. Vail Jr. and his wife Melanie, Seth Alan Vail, Shelby Vail and Curt Vail
Two great-grandchildren: Kaden Vail and MacKenzie Vail
Two nieces & two nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was affiliated with Grace United Methodist Church, Philipsburg.
He was a veteran of the US Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was a firearms instructor at West Point.
He was currently employed at Weis Market, Philipsburg.
His prior employments include: a baker at Penn State University, an Ambulance Driver, an over the road truck driver, owner & operator of Vail Tractor Trailer Company, V&V Construction Company, HRI, Fire Police for the P-O School District, Usher at the Bryce Jordan Center and helped with parking cars during the Penn State Football Games.
He was active in the Philipsburg Community by helping out with fundraisers, the Moshannon Valley YMCA and Holt Memorial Library.
He was a life member of Hope Fire Company; a member of VFW Louis P. Jenkins Post 3450 and Philipsburg BPOE Lodge #1173 where he was a Past Exalted Ruler (1989-1990 & 1998-1999).
He was a former member of the American Legion John Ashley Dennis Jr. Post 437.
He enjoyed wood crafting.
Funeral Services will be held at the David K. Dahlgren Funeral Home, 228 N. Centre St. Philipsburg, on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Mark Thumma officiating. Burial will be in the Philipsburg Cemetery where full military honors will be conducted by the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Aug. 27 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. and on Aug. 28 from 9-11 a.m. An Elks memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 27 at the funeral home.
