The Babysitter’s Training course has an interactive, educational format that tasks youth, ages 11 – 14 years of age, with activities such as identifying safety problems around the house and yard, selecting age-appropriate toys and games for children in their care and providing basic care. Students receive a book, first aid kit and 2 certificates. The course is scheduled for August 21, 2010 at 9:00 am at the Red Cross office. Call 765-5516 to register.
Be Ready for Food Safety
When traveling with perishable food, be sure to have a cooler and plenty of ice or freezer packs. Sometimes it is helpful to have two coolers, one cooler for food and the other for drinks. The “drink cooler” gets opened more frequently with people retrieving drinks. The “food cooler” can remain closed and will keep items cooler longer. There are choices in coolers.
Cooler Packing Tips
To keep the food as cool as possible, move it straight from the refrigerator or freezer to the cooler, packing the foods in the reverse order they will be used at the picnic or campsite. Besides ice or freezer packs, juice boxes can be frozen and used to keep other foods cold. As the juice boxes thaw, they provide cold drinks. Meat and poultry can be packed in the cooler while they are still frozen in order to keep things cooler longer. If the cooler is packed full, it will stay cooler longer than one that is partially packed. If the food items only fill part of the cooler, then top off the empty space with extra ice. Don’t forget to keep the raw meat and poultry wrapped carefully and packed in separate areas from the cooked foods or raw fruits and vegetables.
Place the cooler in the shade to help it hold its cool. Covering it with a light colored blanket, tarp, beach umbrella or poncho also helps to maintain the cool. Remember to use disposable pre-moistened wipes so that everyone has clean hands before preparing and eating the food.
Foods That Travel Well When Camping and Hiking
If you are backpacking or camping for more than just a day, here are some foods, suggested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, that travel well:
- Peanut butter
- Concentrated juice boxes
- Canned tuna, ham, chicken or beef (cans are heavy to carry, so plan accordingly)
- Dried noodles and soups
- Beef jerky and other dried meats
- Dehydrated foods
- Dried fruits and nuts
- Powdered milk and fruit drinks.
