CLEARFIELD – On Monday, the Clearfield Borough Police Department issued a report, advising the public of both a potential phone and mail scam.
According to the report, a male caller who is described with a Jamaican accent contacted a local resident. Police said the caller had limited information about the resident’s elderly grandmother.
Police said the caller requested checking account information. They indicated he was reportedly offering health care options for the elderly.
In addition, police said a local resident received a letter by mail from the United Kingdom. In the letter, the resident was advised they had won the lottery and would receive a large sum of money.
They said the letter stated that if bank account information could be provided to them, the money could then be directly deposited into the same.
Police also said a phone listing was provided in the letter. They said the phone number may result in additional charges to residents.
Police advised that residents should never provide personal information, including bank account details.
They recommended that residents terminate any calls rather than entertaining any caller. They also suggested that they should not respond to any letters with similar content.
