Representing the Old Town Softball League of Clearfield, the Jim’s Sports Center fast-pitch softball team recently traveled to Lancaster to participate in the Class C – Level 2 ASA state championships.
After the first day of competition at the Willow Park Fields was washed out by heavy rains, the tournament was compressed into one day. Forced to play four consecutive games, the Jim’s squad went 2-2 to claim fourth place.
The opening round 9-6 come-from-behind win over Yuengling was highlighted by a four-run seventh inning. After one out Lucas Malloy singled. Then, down to their final out, Danny Clark ripped a game-tying triple to knot the score at six all. Justin Wallace plated Clark with the go-ahead run and Jack Rumfola added two insurance runs with a homerun.
There was no come back in game two as Jim’s was dropped into the loser’s bracket by Shorty’s Bar 9-2 in a game shortened to five innings by the tourney’s 7-run Mercy Rule.
Jims’ title hopes were kept alive by a 14-6 drubbing of CGA of York in the first round of consies. Malloy and Clark paced the attack with three hits apiece, including a double and a triple by Malloy. Greg Hanes homered while Larry Spade doubled. Denny Raffery also added two safeties.
The tournament came to a close for Jim’s after a 9-0 loss to the Old Village Inn in the second round of consies.
