Clearfield Babe Ruth League 13-15 All-stars Split D-8 Tourney Games

COUDERSPORT – After knocking off newcomer Keystone 4-2 in one of the two first round games, the Clearfield Babe Ruth League 13-15 All-Stars watched a 7-1 lead slip away against Potter-McKean in the winner’s bracket semifinals of the District 8 Tournament Saturday.

Clearfield will try to bounce back from the 9-7 loss in an 11 a.m. elimination game Sunday against Williamsport West End, which was nipped 3-2 by State College in the opening round that was set back one day because of Friday rainouts.

A win would move Clearfield into the elimination bracket semifinal against either Keystone or Altoona.

The elimination bracket final and championship game will be played Monday.

Mason Root went the distance and scattered seven hits as Clearfield came from behind twice against Keystone in morning action. He struck out four and walked two.

Clearfield, which had only four hits, tied the game 1-1 in the second on Matt Josephson’s run-scoring single and again in the fourth on Ben Panebianco’s RBI-single. Both were clutch, two-out hits.

Christian Stone drove in the winning run with a groundout after Dale Confer led off the fifth frame by reaching base on an error and advancing on a stolen base and a wild pitch.

Minutes later, Nate Bumbarger walked, stole second and scored the insurance run on Root’s second hit.

Against tourney host Potter-McKean, Clearfield grabbed a quick lead on Root’s two-run single in the first inning and then struck for five runs off starter Dalton Youse and reliever John Rigas in the second.

Christian Lezzer and Root delivered back-to-back, two-run doubles, and Matt Kushner added an RBI-single.

After Potter-McKean rallied for five runs in the top of the third, Rigas retired Clearfield on three groundouts and wound up the winner when his mates posted two more runs in the fourth.

A hit batsman and three walks by Lezzer tied the game before Mitchell Dent’s sacrifice fly plated the winning marker.

Smith then worked four scoreless innings for a save, facing only 14 batters. He fanned three and gave up just two hits.

Coleman Kubala gave Clearfield a chance with four strong innings, surrendering two hits and one unearned run while striking out two, but Smith set down the last eight batters and 10 of the last 11.

Root, Confer and Kubala had two hits apiece in a losing cause.
