STORMSTOWN – The Tri-County Little League 11-and-12 All-Stars turned on the power in the last two innings to oust Clearfield from the District 5 Northern Tier Tournament Tuesday evening.
Â
A grand slam homer run by Dan Simons, who wound up with six runs batted in, and solo shots by Paul Mitchell and Cory Dreibelbis supplied the margin of victory in the elimination bracket first-round game at the Community Park Field.
Â
The four batters at the top of the lineup combined for nine hits and eight RBIs as Tri-County (2-1) out-hit Clearfield 16-4 in the 11-5 win.
Â
Taylor Hawbaker singled three times while Mike Ondik, Simons and Mitchell had two hits apiece.
Â
Travis Reese and Dalton Barger, batting eighth and ninth, also had pairs of safeties.
Â
Evan Brown and Thomas Summers singled twice for Clearfield, which failed to score in the first 11 innings of its two games.
Â
Summers delivered a clutch, two-out single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth to chop Tri-County’s lead to 4-2.
Â
However, Dreibelbis triggered a game-clinching seven-run rally in the sixth with his high drive over the left field fence.
Â
Following consecutive singles by Reese, Barger and Hawbaker, loser Brandon Orsich issued his only walk to force in a run.
Â
Moments later, Simons clubbed his grand slam to center off reliever Logan Lykens to make it 10-2.
Â
Mitchell, who hammered a monster homer to dead center in the fifth, doubled and scored the final Tri-County run on Brady Schafer’s single.
Â
An error and four walks, three by Mitchell in relief of Reese, gave Clearfield a ray of hope in the lower sixth, but Ondik came on to shut the door on two forceouts at third base and a groundout.
Â
Reese, the winner, struck out eight and walked six before reaching the 85-pitch limit after facing two batters in the sixth.
Â
Simons’ other RBIs came on a first-inning single and third-inning sacrifice fly after back-to-back doubles by Barger and Hawbaker had produced a run.
Â
Both of those innings ended with Clearfield’s middle infield turning doubleplays.
