– The PA State Police Fire Marshal at the Ridgway Station and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection conducted an investigation into a fire that occurred in Hamlin Township at 3:15 a.m. Friday. Â
A known suspect reportedly ignited remains of an old building with intent to dispose of the building remains by fire. Passing motorists and neighbors reported a dangerous fire, which caused the response of the Mt. Jewett, Hamlin Township, and Smethport Fire Departments. No injuries were reported.Â
A nearby structure, which belonged to the owner of the ignited building, also suffered minor heat damage. The investigation is continuing. Charges are currently pending at this time.Â
– Police and the DEP would like to remind citizens that the Solid Waste Management Act of Pennsylvania (Act 97). They advised it states that burning of any solid waste without a permit from DEP constitutes unlawful conduct. DEP does not award permits for burning of waste other than in incinerators. They said burning an entire structure’s remains as a substitute for disposal is a violation of Act 97. –
– Police reported a hit and run incident that occurred on Laurel Mill Road at 4 p.m. Sunday. The accident occurred as the vehicle was traveling west on state Route 3002. While rounding a left hand curve in the roadway, the vehicle traveled off the north side of the roadway.Â
The vehicle rotated approximately 45 degrees and struck a large rock with it’s left side. It came to rest along the north side of state Route 3002. A charge of driving on roadways laned for traffic will be filed with the district court.
