PUNXSUTAWNEY – The Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team’s first venture into inter-league play resulted in a pair of wins over Indiana County League foes Sunday afternoon.

After receiving a forfeit from Indiana in a game scheduled for Marion Center’s diamond, the Chiefs traveled to Punxsutawney and breezed past Creps United 11-0 behind the four-hit pitching of Corey Bookhamer at Kuntz Memorial Field to improve their Jefferson County League record to 5-1.

Only two Creps United runners reached second base, Matt Brown on a single and a groundout in the second inning, and Jay Pettina when he and Kyle Edgar solved Bookhamer for back-to-back hits with two outs in the third frame.

The Chiefs’ southpaw registered six strikeouts, issued only one walk and picked off two runners.

Clearfield, 6-1 overall, mustered only five hits off two Creps United hurlers, including run-scoring doubles by Bookhamer and Ronny Ogden, but was aided by five walks and seven errors by the losers.

Bookhamer drove in the only run he needed with a third-inning two-bagger that plated Jarrett Fulmer, who had reached base on an error and moved up on a wild pitch. Bookhamer came around on a passed ball and another error.

Justyn Knepp singled, stole second and scored on a misplay in the third before Clearfield turned four errors and two walks into eight unearned runs in off Shane Van Sant in the fifth.

The Chiefs will be at home Tuesday against Brookville and Wednesday against Punxsutawney in the makeup of a May 30 postponement.
