CLEARFIELD – Pitcher Chad Zurat and first baseman Andrew Redden of Clearfield were named to the 2010 District 9 Northern Allegany Baseball League Big School Division All-Star Team announced this week.
Â
Zurat was one of three hurlers with four league victories and finished 5-1 overall.
Â
The senior right-hander, 1-0 in just eight innings in 2009, was utilized as a closer and short reliever most of the season, notching one save before moving into the starting rotation when No. 1 Trevor Flanagan was unable to return from an injury.
Â
Zurat, who split his two starts, worked 31.1 innings in a team-high 10 appearances, striking out 35 while walking 14 and hitting six batters, five in the 12-8 District 9 Class AAA semifinal loss to Punxsutawney.
Â
He allowed 37 hits and 26 runs, eight unearned, and saw his earned run average rise from 3.34 to 4.27 in the finale.
Â
Zurat patrolled center field when not on the mound, hitting in six of the last seven games to drive his average up to .349 (15-for-43).
Â
Redden, one of five juniors among the 11 all-stars, enjoyed a breakout season with 31 hits in 65 at-bats for a .477 average. He started the season with six of his 11 multi-hit games, had hitting streaks of eight and seven games and was held hitless only three times for the 9-10 Bisons.
Â
He led Clearfield in virtually every offensive category, including runs batted in (22), home runs (5), triples (2), slugging average (.830) and runs scored (20).
Â
Redden’s four doubles and .541 on-base average were second-best for the Bisons.
Â
Braedon Pennington of Punxsutawney was selected as the other pitcher in addition to being awarded Player of the Year honors.
Â
The senior left-hander turned his season around after losing his first two decisions and giving up 18 earned runs for a 6.30 ERA for 20 innings in his first five outings.
Â
In his last six starts, Pennington went 4-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 31.1 innings.
Â
His final stats were a 3.41 ERA and 70 strikeouts for 51.1 innings. He walked 20, hit three and gave up 50 hits and 33 runs (25 earned).
Â
Pennington, who also played left field, hit .535 with four homers, one triple and 10 doubles among his 31 safeties. He drove in 23 runs and scored 26.
