After experiencing four rain-outs in the first six weeks, Hummingbird Speedway finally had great weather for Saturday night’s racing program. Picking up Memorial Day weekend feature wins were Adam Nixon of Grampian in the Four Cylinder class, Joe Kot of DuBois in the Street Stocks, Jason Witherite of Luthersburg in the Limited Late Models, Matt Heindl of St. Marys in the Pure Stocks, and Johny Miller of Punxsutawney in the Front-Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders. Each received a trophy courtesy of the McMillen #50 Race Team and In Memory of Mike Eberl, a long-time area racing supporter and photographer.
Leading off the feature action were the Four Cylinders, with Mike Anderson and Paul Metz Jr. on the front row. Anderson took the early lead, with Metz and Adam Nixon giving chase. Metz spun on lap three, and Nixon took the lead away from Anderson on the restart. He began to stretch his lead until another caution on lap six bunched the field back up. At the halfway mark it was Nixon, Anderson, Randy Albert, Metz, and Craig Lobb. Don Henry gave everyone a scare when something broke in the steering of his car coming off of turn four and he slammed the frontstretch wall very hard. Henry was unhurt, but the car suffered serious damage. Nixon once again held the lead on the restart and he captured his second win of the season. Heat winners were Henry and Nixon.
The Street Stocks were next up, and Bob Rosman and Nathan Yeaney led the field to the line. Rosman led the first lap, but Gary Little spun on lap two slowing the action. On the ensuing restart, Jim Bloom lost an axle and tire. Dan Smeal got past Rosman on the next restart and took the lead. Halfway through the event Smeal continued to lead, followed by Joe Kot, Rosman, Jamie Price, and Chad Rougeux. Rosman spun on lap twelve, and Smeal and Kot pulled away on the restart. Kot worked hard to get by Smeal, and was finally able to get under him for the lead with three laps to go. Kot stretched his lead late for his first win of the season. Heat winners were Kot and Little.
Luke Hoffner and Bob McMillen brought the field of Limited Late Models to the waving of flagman Bob Sullinger’s green flag to start their feature event. Hoffner took the early lead, but all eyes were on Jason Witherite as he went between McMillen and Cody Schultz to take second place. Following several early cautions, Witherite took the lead away from Hoffner on a lap five restart. A number of other cautions slowed the pace, and at the halfway mark Witheite continued to lead, followed by Schultz, Ed Connor (subbing for Denny Draisma), Derek Rodkey, and Dwayne Brooks. The cautions continued, but Witherite continued to hold the lead and took the win. Schultz and Connor battled for second, and as the checkered flew it was Schultz, Connor, Brooks, and McMillen making up the rest of the top five. Heats were won by Hoffner and Brooks.
The always exciting Pure Stocks began their feature event with Steve Arthurs and Jeremy Buck making up the front row. Arthurs took the early lead, and Buck spun in turn two. Arthurs continued to hold the lead on the restart as B.J. Hudson, Matt Heindl, and Dustin Challingsworth battled for second. Hudson got around Arthurs for the lead on lap four, and Arthurs spun on lap six. Hudson continued to lead, and halfway through the event it was Hudson, Heindl, Kevin Clark, Buck, and Ryan Hess. Hudson’s night ended as he experienced a problem and headed to the pits, handing the lead over to Clark. Heindl got by Clark one lap later, and as Clark & Buck battled for second they made contact and both spun. Heindl stretched his lead on the last few laps and won his second feature of the season. Hess took second, followed by Dave Kohler, Clark, and Buck. Heat winners were Justin Kanouff and Hudson.
A full field of 24 Front-Wheel Drive Four Cylinders was on hand and all but one car made the call to start their feature. Dan White and Stephanie Lucas were on the front row, and Lucas led early, receiving pressure from Aaron Luzier. Luzier got by Lucas to take the lead on lap four, and at the halfway mark he held the top spot, followed by Johny Miller, Lucas, Doug Surra, and Shawn Fedder. After several green flag laps, Luzier and Miller began to pull away. As Lucas and Fedder raced for position, they made contact and Lucas spun on the frontstretch. Luzier and Miller put on a good show battling for the lead on the restart, and with several more late cautions, Miller took his first win of the year. Luzier, Rich Lucas, and Stephanie Lucas copped the heats.
82 cars were in the pits, including 17 Limited Late Models, 15 Street Stocks, 11 Four Cylinders, 15 Pure Stocks, and 24 Front-Wheel Drive Four Cylinders. Action continues next Saturday, with a five-division racing program beginning at 7PM.
