Bison Hardballers Beaten by Altoona for Third Time

ALTOONA — The Clearfield Bison baseball team ended their regular season Friday afternoon at 9-9 after losing to Altoona for the third time. In addition to the normal “home and home” series against Altoona, Clearfield faced off with the Mountain Lions in the finals of the Curve Classic, a game they lost 8-1.

Altoona was able to make short work of the Bisons by invoking the 10-run Mercy Rule with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, 11-1.

Clearfield had actually taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a single by second baseman Jarrett Fulmer and an RBI double by shortstop Derek Danver.

Altoona then answered with a five run outburst in the bottom of the first to take control of the game. The big blow was a two-out, two-run double by third baseman Nate Clancy.

Bison starting pitcher Curtis Frye settled down and held Altoona scoreless over the next two innings, but couldn’t survive the home team’s  five-run salvo in the bottom of the fourth inning and had to give way to freshman reliever Kurtis Krise.

Danver was the only Bison to collect two hits on the day as the Bisons were held to only five for the game.

The Bisons will now turn their attention to the post season as the District 9 AAA playoffs begin on Wednesday May 26. The number two seed Bisons will host the number three seed Punxsutawney Chucks at 4:30. The two teams split during the season, each winning on their home turf.

The winner will face the top seed St.Marys Flying Dutch at a place and time yet to be determined.
