Elizabeth Ann Cochrane, 85, of Scottsdale, Arizona (formally of Curwensville, Pennsylvania and Springfield, Virginia) passed away peacefully on Friday evening, May 14, 2010, at the Shadow Mountain Health Care Center in Scottsdale. Elizabeth was born in Spangler, Pennsylvania on May 30, 1924. She was the daughter of Robert C. Weaver and Margaret B. (Young) Weaver.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her father and mother; her husband Edward J. Cochrane; her father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Ethel Cochrane; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert C. Weaver Jr. and Lois; and brother-in-law Jack Cochrane. She leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Cochrane and Sharon, and granddaughters Christina and Deborah; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca del Castillo and Martin, and granddaughters Jacqueline, and Renee; sisters-in-law Betty Cochrane and Mary Weaver; nephew Ed Cochrane and wife Dianne; nephew Dave Cochrane and wife Frannie; nephew Robert C. Weaver III and wife Margee; niece Patty Hairston and husband Henry; nephew Tom Weaver; great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
Elizabeth graduated from Curwensville High School where she was the varsity head cheerleader, played the piano at school assemblies and obtained exceptional typing and shorthand skills. She answered our Nation’s call during World War II, moved to Washington D.C., and served as an executive secretary in the Department of the Navy. At the conclusion of the war she married Curwensville native Edward J. Cochrane, and they resided in Northern Virginia for the next 52 years-first in Arlington and subsequently in Springfield. She was a member of the local Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Eastern Star.
Elizabeth served with distinction during a 21 year career with the Fairfax County Public Schools system which began in 1961 at Edsall Park Elementary School and concluded at Mantua Elementary School in 1982. During her tenure, Fairfax County was recognized as having the best public school system in the nation.
In 2001, following the death of her late husband Edward, Elizabeth moved to Grand Blanc, Michigan to be located near daughter Rebecca and her family. Three years later she moved with them to Scottsdale, Arizona. At the time of her passing Elizabeth was a resident of the Shadow Mountain Health Care Center.
The family will receive friends on May 21 at the Chidboy Funeral Home, 300 State St., Curwensville, Pa, from 11:00 a.m. tonoon. A Memorial Service will be held immediately after beginning at noon with Mr. Gary Jewart officiating. Burial will be at the Mount Zion Cemetery in Mahaffey, Pa.
