The Tide officially end their MVL season with a perfect 4-0 record and improve to 11-4 on the year under first year head coach Denny Johns who said afterwards, “Winning the Moshannon Valley League is always a goal here at Curwensville and this is certainly something we wanted since the start of the season.”
Jed Greslick, making his first mound appearance for the Tide, went the distance after a shaky start allowing three runs to the Black Knights in the top half of the first. After that the senior posted all zeros on the board against the visiting Mo Valley squad.
Curwensville would tie the game in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own. It was a blast over the centerfield fence for Tide shortstop Shane Hoover that was the highlight of the first inning for the home team. Hoover’s shot came with a man aboard and two outs.
The Tide would take the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning when they pushed four runners across to go up 7-3 after three innings were complete. Curwensville would score one in the fourth and two in the sixth to finish the scoring on the afternoon.
Hoover and Sam Gardner each had three hits for the Tide offense with Hoover driving in four runs. All of Gardner’s hits were of the extra base variety with two doubles and a triple and he also crossed home plate four times.
Greslick and left fielder Shae Best chipped in with two hits of their own for Curwensville.
Mo Valley was led by Eric Gmerek with two hits, one a double, and two RBI’s.
Johns was very pleased with both his offense and defense, “Defensively we were as solid in the infield today as we have been all season long.” About his offense Johns said, “Offensively it was nice to see everyone swinging the bat with confidence and being aggressive”
The Tide skipper was also very happy for Greslick, “Been a long time since Jed (Greslick) has taken the mound and it was great to see him be so effective.”
The Golden Tide will next play on Saturday at 1 pm in a home make-up game with the Elkers of Ridgway
