Golden Tide junior Garrett Laborde went the distance giving up just three hits and striking out 17 Owls in the shutout victory.
Curwensville only managed four hits themselves but utilized ten walks in picking up their tenth win of the season under first year head coach Denny Johns. The Tide are now 10-4 in 2010.
The winning run for Curwensville was actually scored in the bottom of the third after the two squads went scoreless through two and a half innings.
Three walks for the Tide to Derek Brothers, Jed Greslick and Wes McGarry loaded the bases with Sam Gardner driving in Brothers with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Another sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the fourth inning would give Curwensville it’s second run. Alex Holland, courtesy runner for LaBorde, scored on a one out sacrifice fly to left field by catcher Brothers.
A big three run fifth inning for Curwensville made sure the Owls would go down to defeat.
Gardner led off by striking out but reached first base on a catcher’s error with Brett Sutika following with a base on balls.
Shane Hoover grounded to second base for the first out of the inning moving Gardner to third and Sutika to second.
With Holland drawing a walk to load the sacks for the Tide, LaBorde singled to right field driving home Gardner.
Jonathan Michaels then picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field that would score Sutika.
Holland would score the third run of the inning when he came home on a Harmony error.
Curwensville would finish the scoring on the afternoon by adding another tally in the bottom half of the sixth inning to set the final score in their favor at 6-0.
Of the four hits the Golden Tide had, two were of the extra base variety with Gardner smacking a triple and Greslick adding a double.
Harmony center fielder Joe Leyo paced the Owls with two singles.
Johns spoke of the victory, and especially the job by LaBorde, “Garrett, with limited work on the mound all year, was pretty much lights out on the afternoon.”
Then the Tide coach added, “We were actually flat offensively for some reason and not aggressive at all in the batter’s box.”
The Tide will be at home again on Friday when they host Moshannon Valley in another Moshannon Valley league battle starting at 3:30 pm. This is a change from the originally scheduled starting time of 4:15 pm.
