In their first meeting of the season on April 13 Johnsonburg beat the Tide by the same 6-2 score.
Inning number one proved to be fatal for the Rams as Curwensville would score five times, all the runs the Tide would need on the afternoon to gain victory number eight on the year against four losses.
Leadoff hitter, Jed Greslick, started the first frame off for Curwensville by blasting a triple into the right centerfield gap with Wes McGarry following with a walk against Ram starting pitcher Coty Gorske.
Sam Gardner then singled to left bringing home Greslick with the Tide’s first run of the contest.
After a stolen base by Gardner gave the Tide runners on second and third, Brett Sutika delivered with a two run single to centerfield scoring his two teammates.
The Sutika single sent Gorske to right field to make way for relief pitcher Zac Luhr who promptly walked Golden Tide right fielder Shane Hoover before getting the first out of the inning.
With one out Jonathan Michaels drew the third walk of the inning for Curwensville which loaded the bases.
Walk number five, this time to Boone McGary, allowed Sutika to trot home with the fourth run of the inning for the Tide.
Derek Brothers picked up an RBI when he grounded out to shortstop as Hoover crossed the plate for the final tally of the first inning for Curwensville.
Greslick would add the sixth and final run for the Tide with a two out solo home run in the bottom of the fifth increasing their lead to 6-0.
The two runs the Rams would muster came off a two run blast by Jesse Wolfe in the top half of the sixth inning with no outs.
Greslick, Gardner and Sutika each had two hits with Greslick having the triple and homer.
Curwensville’s offense was also helped out by the Johnsonburg pitching staff which walked nine Tide batters on the day.
Each team stranded ten base runners in the contest.
Joe Holmberg had three base hits for Johnsonburg, including a double and a triple. Vince Vavala helped out as he chipped in with two singles for the Rams.
McGarry went the distance for the Tide stretching his record to 4-2 for the 2010 campaign.
Tide head coach Denny Johns said afterwards, “It’s nice to get back into the win column after losing tough ball games the last two times out.” Then Johns added, “Overall I thought we played fairly well defensively despite the four errors. Wes (McGarry) pitched well for us.”
The Tide travel to DuBois on Monday to battle the Cardinals of DuBois Central Catholic at 4:15 pm. Curwensville defeated DCC in their first meeting this season 9-3.
