HYDE – Sami Jo Kirk might be the No. 2 starter for the DuBois Area High School softball team, but she has pitched like a No. 1 against Clearfield this season.
Â
The freshman right-hander shut out the Lady Bisons for the second time Monday, racking up 13 strikeouts while allowing only one hit and two walks over six innings in a 10-0 win at the Clearfield junior varsity field Monday afternoon.
Â
On April 1, Kirk checked the Lady Bisons on two hits with six strikeouts and one walk for a five-inning 12-0 victory.
Â
“We had about the same results as last time,” said Clearfield assistant coach Rodger Porter, who guided the team with head coach Bob Dixon not available because of personal reasons. “I don’t know if she’s confusing our kids, or what it is. We were not very aggressive at the plate, and that’s a disappointing thing.”
Â
Porter regards Kirk as deceptively fast.
Â
“And she has some different pitches,” he said. “We just couldn’t get the bat on the ball.
Â
“Then she has that changeup that got a couple of them.”
Â
That pitch cost Kirk a no-no, though.
Â
Mikayla Ebeling led off the fifth inning by jerking a 1-2 changeup through the right side for Clearfield’s lone safety.
Â
The only one other ball to reach the outfield was Melinda Owens’ fly to left in the first frame.
Â
Ebeling was doubled up when Morgan Marchiori caught Mia Keener’s looper while standing on first base, so Kirk completed her third win by facing only 16 batters over the last five innings.
Â
Meanwhile, DuBois (11-2) scored in every inning except the third to pad its District 9 Northern Allegany League Big School Division record to 6-0.
Â
Six Lady Beavers with two hits apiece did most of the damage against Heather Picard.
Â
No. 8 hitter Casey Wilcox drove in three runs, while No. 9 hitter Taylor Maholtz and Carly Wallock each had two RBIs.
Â
Lindsay Obremski doubled twice, Kirsten Wilcox singled and tripled and Kailyn Angelo singled and doubled.
Â
Wilcox singled, stole second and scored the only run Kirk needed on Wallock’s hit in the first, and Casey Wilcox rammed a single into left field for two runs in the second.
Â
Aided by four of Clearfield’s five misplays, DuBois made it a runaway with three runs in the fourth and three in the sixth, half of which were unearned.
Â
“DuBois has a good ball team,” Porter acknowledged. “They’ve got good pitching and good hitting.
Â
“We’re gonna keep working. As Bob keeps saying, we’re going to get better.”
Â
The Lady Bisons, 2-3 in the league and 6-6 overall, return to their varsity field Tuesday for a non-league game against Hollidaysburg before making the long trip to Bradford Wednesday for another D9NAL contest.
