DUBOIS – Dom Kriner’s bases-loaded single behind second base in the bottom of the seventh inning plated Garrett Peterson with the run that gave DuBois a 6-5 win over Clearfield in an important District 9 Northern Allegany League Big School Division baseball game at Showers Field Monday evening.
Â
The Beavers trailed 5-4 going to their final at-bat but drew even on doubles by pinch-hitter John Georgino and Peterson.
Â
Bison hurler Tyler Jacobson, who went the distance for the first time, then intentionally walked Tyler Miles to set up a forceout at every base, but an error on Derek Clark’s sharp grounder filled the sacks with only one out for Kriner.
Â
His hit kept DuBois (7-3) tied for first place in the D9NAL with St. Marys, which defeated Punxsutawney 5-3.
Â
The co-leaders are 4-1, one game ahead of the Bisons, who are 3-2.
Â
Clearfield (6-6) almost pulled off a repeat of its 7-6 stunner over the Beavers on April 12, a game in which the Bisons rallied for all of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Â
Down 4-1 in the sixth, the Bisons knotted the score on pinch-hitter Justyn Knepp’s two-run single to left that chased Brady Bish and Garrett Samsel’s RBI-single off of reliever Nate Sabados.
Â
With two outs and two on in the seventh, Sabados hit Chad Zurat and Samsel to force in the go-ahead run that set the stage for the lower seventh.
Â
Early on, the Beavers took a 3-1 lead on a home run by Sabados in the first inning and run-scoring singles by Mario Gregorio and Peterson in the third.
Â
They threatened to break it open in the fourth, loading the bases with none out. However, Jacobson wriggled out of trouble by inducing two infield pop flies and then recording the first of his three strikeouts.
Â
“He pitched pretty well against a good lineup,” Clearfield coach Sid Lansberry said.
Â
Shane Harper singled home Matt Lonjin with the first Bison run in the second frame.
Â
Clearfield will play Bradford at home Wednesday and away Friday.
