PHILIPSBURG – Citizens in Philipsburg will join thousands of individuals across the country to celebrate National Preservation Month this May. “Old is the New Green” is the theme of the month-long celebration sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
We know that preservation is good for communities and good for the pocketbook, but in the face of our growing climate crisis, we can also say with confidence that preservation has a significant role to play in fostering development that is more environmentally and economically sustainable. By giving Preservation Month the theme of sustainability, we are hopeful communities and organizations across the country will help spread the word that preservation is inherently green. When you reinvest in older and historic buildings, live in a historic home, or even become a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation or your local preservation organization, you support a more sustainable world. Spread the word this May – Old is the New Green!
Since the National Trust for Historic Preservation created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight grassroots preservation efforts in America, it has grown into an annual celebration observed by small towns and big cities with events ranging from architectural and historic tours and award ceremonies, to fundraising events, educational programs and heritage travel opportunities. Due to its overwhelming popularity, in 2005, the National Trust for Historic Preservation extended the celebration to the entire month of May and declared it Preservation Month to provide an even longer opportunity to celebrate the diverse and unique heritage of our country’s cities and states and enable more Americans to become involved in the growing preservation movement.
Preservation Month 2010 will be kicked-off here in Philipsburg at the Philipsburg Historical Foundation. The foundation will have an open house at the Philipsburg Historical Foundation Museum on May 2 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. the museum located at 203 North Front Street. Beginning on the last Sunday in May the museum, the Simler House, and the Union “Old Mud” church will be open for free tours every Sunday from 2:00-4:00 pm through Labor Day weekend. The PRC and MVEDP will hold a Business After Hours in historic downtown Philipsburg on May 24 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at 1 North Front Street Café Books and Events.
