CLEARFIELD – Two new events are coming to Clearfield in conjunction with the annual Riverfront Festival.
The Clearfield Revitalization Corporation is holding two races; one by water, and one by land. The races? CRC’s ‘Anything That Floats’ Boat Regatta and The CRC Amazing Race: Downtown Clearfield Challenge.
On Monday, an excited Kellie Truman shared the details of the events with GantDaily at The Angry Bean.
According Truman, CRC Main Street manager, these are the CRC’s first really big events.
“We’re really psyched,” Truman said.
She added that the idea for both events came after the CRC’s Promotions Committee heard from a member of the Riverfront Festival Committee, which is a separate entity from the CRC. She said the Promotions Committee really saw this as an opportunity to bring some new life to the festival and incorporate the Main Street concept.
“We looked at what Clearfield has to offer,” Truman said in regard to developing the events.
She said the regatta idea began when someone mentioned the Bicentennial Raft. The committee then began looking at water activities and the regatta came up. Putting the regatta provided some challenges.
“How do you put a boat regatta together,” said Truman.
She said they contacted the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and applied for a permit. They measured the width of the Susquehanna River to come up with a total number of boats and developed the rules and framework for the race.
“It was a lot of work,” added Truman.
A few of the rules include but are not limited too: no canoes or kayaks, no peddle-boats, and no motors or engines (all boats must be propelled by human power).
The boat regatta will take place on June 12 at 1 p.m. The registration fee is $40 per vessel, plus any additional donations collected. If a team collects a $100, each person on the team will receive a free Clearfield All-American City T-shirt. Prizes of $100 in Chamber Checks will be issued for the winner, runn-up and most creative theme.
The other event the committee is working on is the CRC Amazing Race: Downtown Clearfield Challenge. Truman said the idea behind this event was to do something with downtown merchants and to help funnel people into downtown businesses through the festival. She said the event will get people into the businesses and generate buzz. She said they are currently looking for businesses to participate in the event.
This event begins at 10 a.m. on June 11 and lasts until 2 p.m. Teams will be given a clue, which will point them in the direction of a downtown business. Once the team reaches that business, they will be given a challenge. The first team to reach all of the destinations or the team that reaches the most before time expires wins.
This race will occur rain or shine. The entrance fee is $5 per person. The winning team will take home a gift basket made up of donations from each stop in the race.
Information on the events can be found on Facebook (The CRC Amazing Race: Downtown Clearfield Challenge)/(Anything That Floats Boat Regatta), at the CRC Office at 207 E. Market St., Clearfield, or by contacting Kellie Truman at 765-6000.
