Lawrence L. McGovern, 86 of Philipsburg, died Sunday, Feb. 14 at the Clearfield Hospital.
Born on Dec. 3, 1923, he was the son of the late Charles H. Hortense (Renoe) McGovern. He was a member of the St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Philipsburg.
Mr. McGovern was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was also a licensed pilot. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #3450, Philipsburg.
He attended the Cooper Township High School. He was the owner and operator of the McGovern Coal Company, Kylertown. He was later employed at the Mid-State Airport, Philipsburg, until his retirement.
In January 1952, he wed the former Helen L. Sotak. She preceded him in death on March 20, 2009.
Mr. McGovern is preceded in death by his parents and wife and a brother, Clair McGovern.
He’s survived by a daughter, Sandra L. Gantt and her husband, Todd, Sr., of State College and a sister, Anne Motter, of Webster, FL.
He’s also survived by four grandchildren, Jennifer Kanour Pensa, of Guilford, CT; James Kanour, of Maitland, FL; Allison Kanour Martin and her husband, Brent, of Boalsburg; and Todd Gantt, Jr., of State College.
In addition, he’s survived by four great-grandchildren, Elena and Antonio Pensa, of Guilford, CT, and William and Joseph Martin, of Boalsburg. He’s also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Robert J. Kelly officiating at the Beezer-Heath Funeral Home. Interment will be at the St. Mary’s Cemetery, Frenchville.
No public visitation will be held.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the Moshannon Valley Independent Honor Guard.
