More than 17 million people learn lifesaving skills from the American Red Cross every year. The Red Cross offers many classes, ranging from First Aid, CPR for adult, child and infant & AED instruction to special training for babysitters and lifeguards and emergency pet care. There are even classes that teach children about safety and hygiene with detailed information listed below. Taking a Red Cross course is a great way to keep your family informed and prepared to respond.
Adult CPR, Infant/Child CPR and Basic first aid are scheduled every month and private classes for your group or business can be scheduled upon request. Monthly class schedule listed below. Children’s program may also be scheduled upon request.
FIRST AID FOR CHILDREN TODAY
A Program to help children ages 5 to 8 understand the important role they have in managing their own health and safety as well as the health of the environment in which they live.
-Introduces an awareness of behaviors and action that could lead to injuries or illness.
-Provides children with knowledge to prevent injuries and use first aid skills to respond to emergency.
-Encourages children to make choices that will influence their health and the environment in a positive way.
POISON PREVENTION
This course introduces the concept of Poisonous products and/or things in our homes. Demonstrates prevention and the importance of telling a grown up of a suspected occurrence
BASIC AID TRAINING
-Introduces children ages 8-11 to safety information and first aid procedures for breathing difficulties, bleeding, poisoning, burns, shock and other emergencies.
-Teaches the Emergency Action Steps, the correct first aid sequence and when to make an emergency telephone call. Instructs to check a victim, the rescue breathing technique, know safety precautions to prevent choking and first aid procedure for choking.
-Be aware of safety precautions to prevent injuries and know correct first aid and rescue in the case of small wound, severe wounds, nosebleeds, animal bite, bruises, fractures and electric shock. Teaches ways to prevent fires and burns, how to develop a fire escape plan for their home;
-Be able to identify common household poisons, how safety precautions to prevent poisoning and know first aid procedures for poisoning.
This course can be taught in segments of your choice.
SCRUBBY BEAR PERSONAL HYGIENE
The purpose of Scrubby Bear—Personal Hygiene is to teach children ages 4 to 7 how germs are spread, how to prevent the spread of disease and to properly wash their hands.
-Defines what germs are and explains how to prevent the spread of germs.
-Demonstrates the three steps for proper hand washing.
-Summarizes how the body fights disease and the importance of protecting our skin.
-Teaches when to wash their hands and how to care for a minor cut or scrape.
Brighten Someone’s Day with a dozen colorful novelty carnations. Order deadline is March 30. Your order will be delivered on Administrative Professional Day (formerly Secretary’s Day) April 21. BABYSITTER TRAINING
The purpose of Babysitter Training is to teach students to Define leadership and identify role modeling, respect, communication, motivation, taking action and decision making as important leadership skills.
-Identify safety-related problems and know how to prevent, recognize and fix them to create a safer environment in and around the home
-Identify which behaviors to expect from children based on their ages and developmental stages.
-Administer basic care of feeding, hygiene and play
-Recognize emergency situations and provide proper care for illness, injury and life threatening situations
March is Red Cross month; therefore it is time for our Annual Community Campaign! Our campaign goal is $50,000. Our budget is $271,735 or $745 per day. Our Disaster Services Program Expense is $102,500 or $280.00 per day, which includes client assistance, blankets and comfort kits for clients and disaster training materials. Attention Childcare providers! A Pediatric First Aid and Infant Child CPR class for child care providers will be held at the Brookville Red Cross office on May 1 at 9:00 a.m. Information and registration are available on the PA KEYS Web site.
The spring 2010 Red Cross Auction will be held at the St. Charles Café on April 9. The tickets are $12.00 and are available at the Red Cross offices. There is a wide variety of items to be auctioned, such as local artist paintings, Professional Limited Edition prints, autographed prints of Joe Paterno, Bed & Breakfast packages, 40” HD TV, assorted goodie baskets, gift certificates, Paula Dean items, several hand crafted items and much more. Preview and light buffet at 5:00 p.m., Live Auction starts at 7:00 p.m. Mark the date on your calendar.
Cash Calendar for the Month of June, based on the Big Four Evening Lottery numbers will benefit the Clearfield-Jefferson Red Cross. | Did you know that the Chapter offers Babysitting classes? This class is available for students from age 11-15, and teaches care-giving skills! Students will learn to handle an emergency, illness, perform minor first aid, make responsible decisions and keep children safe.

Health & Safety Classes:
A Cat and Dog First Aid course is scheduled for April 14 at 6:00 p.m. at the Red Cross office. The purpose of this course is to teach participants how to be prepared for emergencies that involve a cat or dog. They are also taught how to protect themselves and the animal from further harm, injury or suffering during emergencies by teaching prompt, effective first aid action and care. You will receive your choice of a Cat or Dog Manual and DVD. Cost for the course is $20.00. Call the office to register.
A Lifeguard recertification course is scheduled in Punxsutawney at the Middle School on March 27 at 9:00 a.m. This is recertification only. Students need to be prepared to demonstrate swimming and rescue skills and pass the written test on their own. Please study your manuals and be prepared.
Lifeguard training is scheduled to begin on March 23 from 5:30- 8:30 p.m. at the Curwensville School. Additional dates include March 30, April 5, 6, 13, and 16 at the Curwensville pool. First aid and CPR at the Red Cross office is April 27, May 4 and May 11, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. Please call the office to register.
CPR for the Professional Rescuer courses are scheduled for April 17 and May 15 at the Red Cross office at 9:00 a.m. Lifeguards who need to recertify should call 765-5516 to register for one of those classes.
