HERSHEY — The high school wrestling season came to an end on day two of the PIAA State Wrestling Championships for the last two Clearfield Bison wrestlers.
Bison grapplers Andre Buck and Christian Stone fell one win short of the goals of obtaining a medal by placing in the top eight.
Senior 285 pounder Buck had won his preliminary bout on Thursday 11-4 over William Carter of Pottstown.
Buck’s quarterfinal opponent was sophomore Averee Robinson (36-2) of Susquehanna Township. Neither wrestler was able to secure a first period takedown, so action went to the second period scoreless.
There, Buck chose down and escaped about thirty seconds in to take the lead 1-0. Robinson was able to get the first takedown at the edge of the mat to take a 2-1 lead, only to have Buck escape and head to the final period even at two.
Buck couldn’t turn his larger opponent and had to cut him loose after a minute and hope for a potential winning takedown. Down 3-2 with under a minute to go, Buck was the aggressor on Robinson.
Unfortunately, Robinson was able to counter Buck’s takedown attempts with two takedowns of his own to set the final at 7-4.
After the loss Buck moved on to the second round of consolations against Marcus Robbins (42-5) of Norristown. Robbins was just too much for Buck, throwing him to his back for a five point move in the first period and then pinning Buck 51 seconds into the second period. Buck’s senior season record ended at 28-10.
At 103 pounds Stone entered the second round of consolations off of his 10-0 win over Mike McCall of Northeast Catholic. There Stone encountered quarterfinal loser junior Jordan Conaway (39-2) from New Oxford.
Stone had an early lead but was eventually beaten 10-4 to finish his rookie season at 34-9.
125 pound classmate Nolan Barger had been eliminated on the first day’s action to finish his sesaon at 33-10.
The only District 9 wrestler still alive in the meet is St. Marys senior 215 pounder Sean Sadosky (35-0). Sadosky will face off against Selinsgrove senior Spencer Myers (42-0) during the Saturday 8:00 AM semifinal round.
District 6 power Central Mountain heads up the team race with 38.5 points over current runner-up Blue Mountain with 30.0.
Over on the AA side of the tournament, District 9 kingpin Ridgway sits in fourth place and has all four of its wrestlers earning medals. Undefeated heavyweight Joe Chittester will wrestle for the gold medal on Saturday, while 103 pounder Corey Bush and 135 pounder Garet Pisani will go for the bronze. 171 pounder Zack Zelcs will look for a seventh place finish.
