MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD
SALISBURY, Md. – John Bowman of Clearfield broke the Penn State-Behrend outdoor team’s hammer throw record and also had a personal-best in the javelin throw at the season-opening Salisbury University Spring Classic Saturday.
The Lion junior got off a hammer throw of 34.64 meters (113 feet, 7-3/4 inches) to erase the school standard of 32.85 meters (107-9) he set at last year’s Mason-Dixon Conference Championships.
Bowman was second in that event and third in both the javelin with a throw of 51.98 meters (170-6-1/2) and the discus with a heave of 37.82 meters (124-1). He bettered his previous javelin record by more than six feet.
Michael Johnson of Clearfield took second in the high jump by clearing six feet, his personal best outdoors.
And he placed sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:00.26.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Freshman Scott Rosenthal of Clearfield earned a season-high 15.100 score for his still rings routine as the No. 6-ranked Penn State defeated Minnesota and Temple in Rec Hall Saturday evening.
Rosenthal’s second career win keyed a 1-2-3 rings sweep by the Nittany Lions, whose season-best 350.150 score topped No. 7 Minnesota’s 348.250 for their first Big 10 Conference victory and No. 11 Temple’s 330.900.
Penn State is 4-3 with a 1-3 Big 10 record.
Rosenthal, whose previous top score was 15.050 in the season opener against Army, also has one second and one third in Big 10 duals, plus seconds in both the team and individual events at the West Point Open in January.

BASEBALL
QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. – Seniors Bart McGary of Curwensville and Phil Solley of Grampian got off to a good start even though Pitt-Bradford lost a pair of 13-7 games to Wesleyan (Conn.) Sunday in its spring break trip openers.
McGary, the Panthers’ right fielder, had two hits, one a double, and one RBI in the first game and two singles and an RBI in the nightcap.
Solley caught the opener and cracked three run-scoring singles.
Freshman Ben McGary, Bart’s brother, pitched three innings in relief and wound up the loser in the first game. A miscue prolonged his third frame, and Wesleyan proceeded to score seven unearned runs.
The left-hander struck out three but gave up nine hits.
Bart McGary entered the season with a career batting average of .328 (85-for-253) and 59 RBIs for 93 games, playing first base and third base as well .
Solley’s average was .314 (77-for-245) for 82 games as catcher, right fielder and designated hitter.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Clearfield Area High School graduate Adam Jury of Bigler has been finding hits hard to come by on Slippery Rock’s spring break trip.
In the first five games of the RussMatt Florida Invitational, the junior shortstop mustered only three single and one double in 21 official at-bats at Lake Myrtle Park. He scored two runs and drove in two.
The Rock split doubleheaders with Rockhurst (Ill.) Friday and nationally-ranked Ashland (Ohio) Saturday and then lost 8-6 to Minnesota State Sunday to fall to 4-5.
Jury is hitting .209 (6-for-29) with three RBIs. He’s walked twice and scored five runs.

SOFTBALL
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Junior first baseman Brittany Pataky of Clearfield had a hit in each game for Lock Haven in its season-opening doubleheader at the Rebel Spring Games Sunday.
She doubled in a 5-3 loss to Concordia (Minn.)-St. Paul and singled in a 1-0 defeat by Northern (S.D.) State.
The Lady Eagles, the defending NCAA Division II champions, went into the season ranked No. 25 in the country and pegged to finish No. 2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division.
Pataky has a .250 career batting average with three doubles and eight runs batted in for 48 games in her first two seasons.

CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman pitcher Holly Lansberry of Curwensville picked up Lycoming’s first two wins last week on the Lady Warriors’ spring break trip to the National Training Center.
Lycoming defeated Michigan-Dearborn 3-0 and Division II Lake Superior (Mich.) State 7-4 on March 1.
Freshman Ashley Demchak, who was Lansberry’s batterymate on Curwensville’s second PIAA Class A championship team in three years, delivered a run-scoring single in a pinch-hitting role after clubbing a home run in a 4-3 loss to Concordia (Minn.) in the third of Lycoming’s four games that day.
Lansberry also was the pitcher of record in a 10-8 loss to Marywood on March 4. She gave up seven runs, five of them earned, in three innings.
Lansberry had two hits and drove in one run while Demchak had a pinch-hit double in that game.
Lycoming, which finished 3-9 on the trip, is coming off its first multi-win season (12-22) since 2006 and was picked by the Commonwealth Conference coaches to end up seventh in the eight-team league.

WRESTLING
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Lock Haven redshirt junior Derek Caldwell of Curwensville placed sixth at 174 points in the Eastern Wrestling League Tournament hosted by West Virginia Sunday.
After losing 7-1 to third seed Nate Graham of Bloomsburg in the first round, Caldwell began the wrestlebacks with a 5-2 win over Marcus Effner, who had beaten him 7-4 in a Jan. 30 dual meet.
Clarion’s No. 4 seed Steven Cressley of Punxsutawney dropped Caldwell into the fifth-place bout with a 5-2 decision.
Pitt’s No. 2 seed David Graham prevailed 5-1 in that match.
Caldwell was 6-22 for the Bald Eagles, who were 1-5 in the EWL duals and 2-9 overall.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
ERIE – Freshman guard Matt Shiner of Clearfield played in 11 games for Penn State-Behrend but did not see action as the Lions closed the season on a high note by winning the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Tournament championship over the weekend.
Seeded No. 3, Penn State-Behrend (21-8) upset No. 2 Bethany (W.Va.) 67-65 Saturday and then defeated No. 5 Alvernia 79-73 Sunday on the Catholic University hardwood in Washington, D.C.

WOMEN’S DIVING
FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Lincoln (Ill.) College sophomore diver Amber Centi of Clearfield placed sixth in the three-meter event and seventh off the one-meter board at the 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association National Championships at Indian River State College’s Ann Wilder Aquatic Complex last week.
Centi bettered her preliminary round scores in both events, earning 242.90 points for her higher dives and 239.5 for the one-meter competition.
The Lady Lynx totaled 215 points to place fifth in the 16-team field.
Centi was unopposed in the NYCAA Region IV Championships Feb. 12-13, and her two firsts helped host Lincoln edge Iowa Central Community College 478-471 for the team title.
She had a season-best 286.20 for one-meter dives and 273.05 for three-meter dives.
