DUBOIS – A global movement to stop violence against women and girls is slated to be the subject of a protest Saturday in DuBois.
V-Day 2010 Clearfield County, under the direction of Bea’s Performing Arts, will present its third and final benefit performance of Eve Ensler’s award-winning “Vagina Monologues” at 8 p.m. at the Reitz Theater on East Scribner Avenue.
The theater has been notified that Saturday’s performance will be protested.
The couple voicing opposition to the performance claims the play is pornography, and is therefore not suitable for presentation. The couple also authored a letter and sent it to the theater. The letter stated that they would protest the production.
The subject matter of the monologues given in the play is of a mature nature. Topics including sex, birth, rape and others are included in the play.
Director Mary Beth “Bea” Geppert said the play will move the audience to laughter, tears and everything in between. “It is a very moving play,” she said. “‘The Vagina Monologues’ is not obscene or vulgar. It is based on real women’s stories so it allows women who hear the stories to know that they are not alone in their own experience.
“It helps people who have experienced violence heal. It inspires people — women AND men — to get involved in V-Day’s efforts to stop violence against women and girls. It removes the shame often associated with the word ‘vagina’ and the vagina itself and instead celebrates the word, celebrates women.”
Tickets were $10 for Saturday’s 8 p.m. performance at the Reitz Theater. However, the show has sold out.
V-Day 2010 Clearfield County is part of a world-wide campaign that acts as a catalyst for mobilizing women and men in a common goal.
The goal of the campaign is to heighten awareness about violence against women and girls, and V-Day 2010 marks the beginning of a large venture for Central Pennsylvania.
Locally, the campaign plans to establish an everlasting fund with the Clearfield County Charitable Foundation for the beneficiaries of the campaign.
These beneficiaries include the Community Action Crossroads Project and Passages.
