LTE: The Red Scare and Winter in Pennsylvania

Dear GantDaily.

With regard to Ed McGarvey of Hooversville:

What is this guy, nuts? Among Mr. McGarvey’s assertions is an absurd claim that you can fix the effects of climate change by putting chlorofleurocarbons back in hair spray. Among his assertions is the old saw I’m really getting tired of: The communists are coming to take over life as we know it. If one reads and follows Mr. McGarvey’s leaky reasoning, the communists are hiding in the shower and perhaps in your wife’s blouse. The communists, sir, have not come yet and I’ve been waiting since the Red Scare of the 1950s.

McGarvey uses the fact that it is winter in Pennsylvania to disprove climate change. Mr. McGarvey. If your son has a temperature, but you put the thermometer on his head rather than in his mouth, you are apt to get a faulty reading. The trend of global warming is a massive, undeniable scientific fact. The planet’s mean temperature is undeniably rising.

I challenge any reader to click on the link below. It is a well sourced examination of the “climategate” issue to which Mr. McGarvey refers. If Mr. McGarvey is man enough to read the article through, I would suggest that he is man enough to retract his original opinion. Factcheck.org is a non-partisan Web site dedicated to setting various public records straight. Try it if you dare, Mr. McGarvey.

Now consider this. If Mr. McGarvey and the rest of the kooks who’ve been waiting for the commies to come since the 1950s are right, and this whole branch of science relative to climate change is a hoax, why then we can just continue living beyond our means as we do today. Fine. But if they’re not so smart after all, and if I and the thousands of verifiable scientific records are right about the impending disaster posed by climate change, we will be leaving our children and grandchildren a legacy of hell on earth.

The problem with Mr. McGarvey is he and others like him are ill-read and ignorant. They choose selective or anecdotal evidence (“Why do they call Greenland green?”) rather than considering the much larger scientific record that is screaming out for human action to curtail the worst effects of climate change.

Many of the driving forces behind climate change denial are big money efforts by the coal, gas and oil industry to just keep raping the planet and defiling the biome we live in all for what? Money. People like Mr. McGarvey are just the hapless dupes of a well financed propaganda campaign.
