CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield Lady Bison basketball team ran into a much scrappier, tougher Johnsonburg squad the second time around Monday night. In the end though the Lady Bisons prevailed on their home court to pick up their eleventh win of the campaign, 51-46.
Clearfield had easily handled the Ramettes back on January 18, 56-29, but this time Johnsonburg was determined to make a game out of it. And they did. All the way to the end.
Joey Castagnolo, head coach of the Lady Bisons, spoke afterwards about the difficult struggle with the Ramettes, “Johnsonburg played a very aggressive, good defensive game. We worked real well though in our half-court offense even though they tried to slow us down all night.”
The Lady Bisons took an 11-7 first quarter lead and a 24-19 half-time margin on their way to increasing their overall season record to 11-6.
The second half actually ended with each team scoring 27 points and Johnsonburg rallying to win the fourth quarter, 19-17 to keep the final result very respectable for the Ramettes.
Clearfield went to the free throw line a total of 21 times, making 12. The Ramettes, who were 5 for 5 from the foul line, hit five three pointers on the evening.
Johnsonburg had two players in double digits, Justis Myers with 12 and Cody Anderson with 11.
The Lady Bisons also had two with double figures, seniors Madison Sopic and Gwenn Porter. Sopic dumped in a game high of 14 while Porter scored 11.
Clearfield’s junior varsity won the opening game, 43-31, as Rachel Thompson paved the way with fourteen points. The Lady Bison JVs are now 9-8 on the 2009-10 season.
No time to rest though for Clearfield as they journey to St. Marys Tuesday night to take on the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders (ECC). In their first meeting of the season ECC prevailed by just three, 39-36, on Clearfield’s home court. Junior varsity action starts at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
