HYDE — If the fans wanted an offensive clinic on the basketball court, the Clearfield Area High School was the place to be Monday night. Coming off of a victory against Bradford, Lady Bison head coach Joey Castagnolo was ready for his girls to ride a wave of momentum and get another win on their record.
But, their opposition was a high-powered and deep shooting team in the St. Marys Lady Dutch.
In a game that saw both offenses going to the basket often, St. Marys proved to be the dominant force on this night. Guard Kayla Hoohuli shot 13 of 35 from the floor, including five shots behind the arc and eight free-throws, for a team high 41 points as the Lady Dutch stopped Clearfield’s momentum with a 66-55 road victory.
Hoohuli got a double-double on the night as she accounted for 11 rebounds while also getting six assists. Amanda Simbeck also broke into double-digits as she had ten points with four rebounds.
The Lady Dutch got off to a slow start and were down 10-6 after just one quarter. But, after that point, it was an all out assault by St. Marys. Castagnolo saw the offensive schemes that St. Marys was playing and his team tried to defend as best they could. Unfortunately, Hoohuli was on her game and drained bucket after bucket.
In the third quarter, the Lady Bisons made a game of it as the two teams went back and forth with the lead. Clearfield got on a roll early as four players hit buckets. Forward Madison Sopic got her game going as she managed to get some key rebounds and also got four quick points. Sopic ended the night with team-highs in scoring, 18, and rebounds, six.
Teammate Gwenn Porter hit three of her 13 points in the third quarter, and also got the ball quickly to her teammates as she passed off for seven assists.
When the third quarter came to a close, St. Marys held a 47-44 advantage. But then, Hoohuli went to work again. St. Marys attempted 15 shots in the final eight minutes, and 12 of them came from Hoohuli. All of the Lady Dutch’s 19 points in the fourth quarter came from the junior guard, including her eight free-throws.
In junior varsity action, Clearfield managed a 43-37 victory in a close battle.
The Lady Bisons (9-6) look to get back on the winning track this Friday night as they travel to Brookville. The jayvee game is set for a 6 p.m. tip off with the Varsity game to follow.
