DUBOIS – For the second time in eleven days the DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) boys basketball team handled the Curwensville Golden Tide with relative ease, 73-42, on Monday night on the Cardinals home court.
Each team had a standout scorer, as Jed Greslick pumped in 26 for the Tide while Chris Marshall hit for 28 for the Cardinals.
DCC raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter before the Tide came back to cut the margin to 13-11 after the first eight minutes, thanks to seven from Greslick.
At the 5:42 mark of the second period Curwensville took it’s only lead of the night, 15-13 before the Cardinals pushed on to go up 30-20 at the halfway point. Sam Gardner, Tide point guard, sat out the last half of the second frame with three personal fouls that helped give DCC an edge.
Curwensville head coach Matt Wassil said afterwards, “Our kids played very well in the first half of tonight’s game. However with the mistakes we made against a team like DCC they are going to capitalize on your mistakes, and they did.”
DuBois Central Catholic put the game away in the third period, thanks to 15 by Marshall, with a 25-11 edge to win their 14th game against only four defeats. Once again, Gardner of Curwensville had to sit out much of the period as he picked up his fourth personal foul mid-way through the third.
Wassil praised his opponents, saying, “DuBois Central can play 10 or 11 players. They are very interchangeable and all play together well as a team. They just have a lot of overall talent.”
Helping out Greslick for Curwensville on offense was Gardner with nine points. Joe McNally with 11 and Dan Fitzpatrick with 10 assisted Marshall for DCC and coach Mike Nesbit.
Even though the Tide are out of the District 9 playoff picture Wassil likes the attitude of his squad, “The kids on this team are very strong willed. They will play hard in every game the rest of the way and try to finish out the year as strong as they can.”
The junior varsity contest also went the way of the Cardinals as they beat Curwensville 45-36 in overtime after a 33-33 regulation tie.
Curwensville, now 4-12, returns to action on Friday night at home against the Rams of Johnsonburg. The Golden Tide stopped the Rams in their first meeting, 72-57, in Johnsonburg on January 12. JV action starts at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
