The Clearfield Bison wrestling team won its 12th straight dual meet of the season with a 54-15 win over an out-manned Brockway Rover squad. With Brockway giving up 30 points in forfeits, the outcome of the match wasn’t in question, so the Bisons used the evening as a tune-up to get ready for next Saturday’s District IX Team Duals, according to head coach Jeff Aveni.
The dual meet started in the traditional way at 103 lbs with Shane Peters receiving a forfeit and then Christian Stone following in exact manner at 112.
The first contested bout of the match occurred at 119 as Nolan Barger went “Tasmanian Devil” style over fellow freshman Troy Hindinger. Barger, now 24-5 on the year, built a dominating 14-1 lead after the first period, locking up cradle after cradle and finally registering the fall in 2:28.
Kodie Lowder gave the Bisons a 24-0 lead when he used a front headlock to pin D.J. Forest in 1:51 at 125lbs. It was the senior’s 20th victory this season.
Brockway was able to light the scoreboard at 130 with Ian Grecco’s 9-3 decision over Max Von Gunden.
Another forfeit, this time to Andrew Hill at 135, increased the Bison margin to 30-3.
At 140, Clearfield’s Shane Harper and Brockway’s Trevor Hartless needed an extra period to settle matters. Both wrestlers traded escapes, but neither was able to register a takedown, so they entered the overtime deadlocked 1-1. Shortly into the 4th period, the referee opined that in his efforts to avoid being taken down, Harper was fleeing the mat, so a penalty point, and the bout, was awarded to Hartless.
Clearfield’s lead increased to 36-6 when Cody Hepfer was on the receiving end of a 4th forfeit at 145.
At 152, Derek Danver and Nathan Hartless put their identical 21-5 records on the line with Danver exiting victorious, 7-4. Danver traded takedowns for escapes on three different occasions to seal the win.
The fifth and final forfeit by the Rovers was accepted by Wil Beauseigneur at 160 to run the Bison lead to 45-6.
At 171, Clearfield’s Logan Shadeck earned his 20th win of the season, and put the Bisons over the 50 point mark, by overpowering Ryan Tewilliger for a fall in 3:25.
The evening’s most entertaining bout developed at 189 lbs when Cliff Hill and Zach Brinkley let it all hang out. Brinkley hit a five point move in the first period, only to see Hill tie things up in the second with an escape and a four point move. Hill jumped into the lead, 7-5, with a two-point nearfall early in the third, but an escape and takedown by Brinkley put the Rover out in front 8-7. Hill worked an escape to tie the bout and send it into overtime, where he needed just 16 seconds to notch the deciding takedown and win 10-8.
Brockway won the last two bouts of the evening with Max Hrinya pinning Jordan Lancaster in 1:38 at 215, and Joel Yahner holding on to a 4-2 victory over Andre Buck at 285.
The 54-15 final was the Bison’s largest margin of victory in their dozen dual meet victories on the season.
Clearfield goes back to work Saturday evening, travelling to Brookville to take on the Blue Raiders.
