RIMERSBURG – Five Lady Bisons scored in double figures Monday night as the Clearfield Area High School girls basketball team snapped host Union’s five-game winning streak 61-37 with one of its better all-around performances of the season.
Madison Sopic topped Clearfield’s balanced offense with 13 points, while Amber Byerly was right behind with 12, Jayme Ryan and Gwenn Porter tallied 11 apiece and reserve Angela Moore chipped in with 10.
The Lady Bisons excelled on the defensive end, too, holding the Golden Damsels’ three leading scorers to eight points. Center Tina Lipps, an RRR Roadhouse D9Sports.com pre-season District 9 first team all-star, junior forward Brooke Pollock and junior guard Ashley MacKinlay were averaging a combined 38 points.
Junior Mariah Winchester and freshman Delani Priester led Union (8-4) with nine points each.
Coach Joey Castagnolo’s Lady Bisons, who had lost their last two games and three of the last four, outscored the Golden Damsels in every quarter to up their record to 8-4. They led 31-19 at the half.
Clearfield (8-4) will travel to Punxsutawney (5-8) Wednesday. With both teams 2-3 in the District 9 League, the game will be very important for District 9 Class AAA seeding.
The Lady Bison jayvees also were victorious, 42-41.
