Returning back to Patton Hall for the first time since their victory last week, the Lady Tide looked for their second win on the season. In their way were the Lady Vikings of Glendale.
Curwensville looked strong early, trailing by just two points at halftime. Unfortunately, the momentum they had at the beginning of the game faded. Missed shots inside the paint and costly turnovers put the Lady Tide on the losing end of a 55-41 final score.
The Tide started off extremely quick, scoring the first nine points of the game. The best play came from Savannah Strickland, who scored eight of the opening nine points. Shortly after, Glendale battled back with huge baskets from Brooke Legrand. After one quarter of play, Curwensville had a 12-8 advantage.
But, just as quickly as their lead was built, it disappeared as Legrand drained two baskets from behind the arc. At the same time, the Lady Vikings were keeping the Tide’s star player, Tess Bloom, in check. Throughout the first half, Bloom was contested going to the basket, being held to a single point in the first 16 minutes.
With Bloom not being able to score, Strickland made up for it as she only missed four shots in the first half, scoring 14 of her team-high 20 points in the first two quarters of play.
The second half belonged to Glendale as they contested each shot put up by Curwensville. Legrand, Morgan Biddle and Kelli McGarvey all ended the night in double-digit figures, scoring 18, 16 and 12 points respectively. Biddle also had a team-high seven rebounds while McGarvey led in assists with six.
In the final quarter, Curwensville struggled to get a bucket. Many of the shots were easy shots in the paint, but the ball failed to hit the rim or was blocked by Glendale. Even with the missed shots, Curwensville battled to get the ball. Katie Wriglesworth finished with a team high nine rebounds while Strickland added another five of her own.
By that time, it was too little, to late as Glendale opened up the lead to double digits as they capitalized on turnovers. The lead was as much as 18 points until Curwensville made three late baskets by Bloom, who finished the night with a season-low seven points.
In the junior-varsity game, Glendale defeated Curwensville 47-18.
The Lady Tide (1-8) will look to come back from the loss as they host Kane Tuesday night.
